19 Nov 4 - Cold Pizza (PRESEASON)

Volume XXIV, No. 1 - 19 Nov 4: PRESEASON - [] Top 25 Ballot

Cold Pizza

Last year's NCAA Tournament culminated in the Sweet Redemption win of the National Championship for the Virginia Cavaliers and coach Tony Bennett just one year after they suffered The Worst Upset Loss In Tournament History (when they became the first No.1 seed to lose to a No.16 [Maryland-Baltimore County]). Veteran coach Bruce Pearl earned the first Final Four appearance in Auburn history while the meteoric rise of young coach Chris Beard followed up 2018's Elite 8 finish with the first National Runner-Up ending for Texas Tech. (Ho hum, coach Tom Izzo reached his EIGHTH FINAL FOUR for Michigan State.) Meanwhile, perennial powers Kentucky and Kansas both were shut out of any major hardware - - (no conference regular season title, no conference tournament crown, no Final Four). While no 1BC (One-Bid Conference) team was able to survive into the second weekend, a very healthy five teams posted first-round Splash wins as Buffalo elevated the MID-AMERICAN to a B-Major-level rating and unbeaten Wofford lifted the SOUTHERN CONFERENCE to Mid-Major status. (Sadly but predictably, both coaches jumped ship to B-Major jobs in the off-season.) The erstwhile 1BC OHIO VALLEY had a breakthrough tourney garnering two bids and two wins (as Murray State/pJa Morant made a 32-Splash while Belmont/xDylan Windler were an NCAA-44 Play-In Winner). Liberty was the ultimate Carpetbagger, switching conferences and claiming the (co-)title/TiTo crown in the ATLANTIC SUN and earning a 32-Splash NCAA win to boot. CONFERENCE USA's streak of four-straight 32-Splash finishes ended (but CIT Champ Marshall did manage to capture the league's third postseason also-ran tourney crown in four years).
In conference, Kansas/Bill Self's record-setting consecutive streak of fourteen (BIG 12) conference titles came to an end (hurt by a key injury). Penn ended Villanova's 5-year/25-game win streak inside the BIG 5 and claimed the Philadelphia City Series outright(undefeated). Meanwhile, Gonzaga/Mark Few continued their domination of the WEST COAST, claiming their EIGHTEENTH REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN NINETEEN YEARS while Villanova/Jay Wright made it 4 or 5 BIG EAST titles (in a down year, no less) with 1BC dynasties in the making for New Mexico State (4 of 5 WAC titles), UC-Irvine/Russell Turner (3 of 4 in the BIG WEST) and Vermont/John Becker (3-straight in AMERICA EAST) all favorites to keep it rolling.
A once-in-a-generation talent (Duke's fZion Williamson) was thrilling to watch, but ultimately underachieved when compared to the standards of the all-time greatest freshmen performers - - when all was said and done, all there was on his resume was an ACC tournament crown. That's a far cry from the Elite one-and-done CVs of tCarmelo Anthony(2003 Syracuse: BIG EAST conference [co-]title/NO tourney crown, NCAA Championship, Most Outstanding Player) and cAnthony Davis(2012 Kentucky: SEC title[undefeated]/NO tourney, NCAA, MOP) but even those two failed to go TiTo in conference. Although it was before the current Golden Child Era, the ultimate Freshman season belongs to cPervis Ellison(1986 Louisville: METRO title/tourney, NCAA, MOP). No one else has run the table completely as a freshman other than "Never Nervous" Pervis. Even gMichael Jordan was only (1982 North Carolina: ACC title/tourney, NCAA, NOT MOP despite hitting that game-winning jumper) as a freshman.

Although it's a year away, the NCAA has been forced to move forward on the issue of player compensation. The State of California passed a law allowing its college athletes to remain eligible while profitting monetarily from the sale of their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). The NCAA has followed suit, to be implemented next year. To be sure, that's a big step forward for the Elite-level stars: it removes the under-the-table stigma for payments traditionally from school-connected boosters and company-connected middlemen (like those wrapped up in the bribery/fraud Shoe Company Scandal). But what this doesn't address are the role players who use up their eligibility and don't even have a college degree to show for it. Maybe they don't deserve millions, but they sure as hell deserve tens of thousands at least for their part contributing to this multi-billion dollar industry. Those guys have no way to infuse value into their individual NILs - - hell, there are still schools (e.g., Indiana) that don't even allow your name on the back of your jersey (in the name of "team first" but at the absolute detriment to your ability to earn the individual admiration, respect and fandom that could actually instill value into your individual NIL). It's the no-names who deserve a significant stipend; the superstars will always get theirs one way or another. Maybe we'll go back to the days of the movie ONE ON ONE (loosely based on UCLA/John Wooden) with athletes getting paid for a "job" (watering the field [using the automatic sprinkler system]). Maybe the Money People will find a way to pay NIL compensation on a group basis so that the no-names will get their share. It will seem ugly on the surface, but what's actually ugly is the uncompensated labor that creates the value in this multi-billion-dollar industry.

In a largely stable off-season, no teams changed conferences (although Long Island did change its nickname from "Blackbirds" to "Sharks"). Savannah State left the MEAC to return to Division-II. Meanwhile, the {Merrimack} Warriors have joined the NORTHEAST and will start the four-year process to full eligibility for Division-I.
Some veteran coaches have left the college scene: Phil Martelli(St. Joseph's), Fran Dunphy(Temple et al.), Ernie Kent(Washington State et al.), Dave Rose(BYU) and Bill Carmody(Holy Cross et al.) are done while John Beilein left Michigan to coach the NBA/Cleveland Cavaliers. Moving up: Mick Cronin left Cincinnati for UCLA (while ousted Steve Alford landed at Nevada after Eric Musselman moved on to Arkansas). Nate Oats left Buffalo for Alabama while Mike Young left Wofford for Virginia Tech (after Buzz Williams moved on to Texas A&M). Ron Hunter left Georgia State to try and resurrect Tulane. Former star players trying their hand at coaching include Juwan Howard at Michigan, Aaron McKie at Temple and Jerry Stackhouse at Vanderbilt. Meanwhile, Fred Hoiberg is back from the NBA to coach at Nebraska.

In a one-year sample, the NCAA's new NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) proved to be a better rating mechanism than the previous RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) had been over many years. The Selection Committee didn't do appreciably better at seeding the teams in the draw as compared to years past. (In the Hoops Contest, picks based on the NET ratings fared comparably well to other prominent team rating systems while picks based on the NCAA Seeds fared poorer in typical fashion.)
Last year, the BIG 10's move from 18 conference games to 20 paid off with 8 NCAA bids (its highest-ever total [and way up from 4 bids in 2018). This year, the ACC will follow suit (and do it one "better" with some conference games coming as early as November). The WEST COAST's move down from 18 to 16 games was inconclusive - - (St. Mary's made it in as a second team when unbeaten Gonzaga failed to Anti-Spoil in the tourney final.) CONFERENCE USA's move to wait until February before scheduling the final four games of its regular season didn't earn it an at-large bid beyond TiTo champ Old Dominion.
The MOUNTAIN WEST/MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE CHALLENGE has been discontinued - - (the MWC led 3-1;4 all-time). Meanwhile, the BIG EAST and BIG 12 have started a new head-to-head CHALLENGE (with all 10 teams participating) while have the SEC and AMERICAN have taken baby steps with a 4-game mini-CHALLENGE. Lower down the ranks, the ATLANTIC SUN and METRO ATLANTIC have started a two-team/two-day double-header.

There is a considerable turnover of talent from last year - - (all that's left in the fridge is Cold Pizza.) Only Liberty is essentially intact from last year's top 32 finishers. Among the entire Sweet 16, only Final 4/Michigan State has its star player returning, pCassius Winston. Marquette's gMarkus Howard also (inexplicably) stayed in college and could have expected his team to be top contenders (if only the Hauser brothers hadn't decided to transfer). Individually, those two are the top holdovers and leading preseason candidates for Player Of The Year.
The "Balance Of Power" has shifted somewhat in terms of where the top Golden Child players landed this year. The PACIFIC-12 is loaded, with Washington, Arizona and USC each scoring two GC signings. The SEC led the way overall with 7 GC stars (but well distributed as only Kentucky managed two). Duke (4) and North Carolina (2) were the only ACC schools to sign any GCs; the BIG 10 (3 singletons) as well as the BIG EAST and BIG 12 (only one GC player each) all were surprisingly lean. New Kid On The Block Memphis shocked everyone with three GC players all by itself (including the overall No. 1 cJames Wiseman; although his eligibility is under NCAA scrutiny. If he's allowed to play, he'll likely lay claim to GC Of The Year, ahead of Arizona's pNico Mannion.)
The SOUTHERN CONFERENCE (East Tennessee State, UNC-Greensboro) looks to have a better chance of upholding its high status from last year than the depleted MID-AMERICAN. ASUN/Liberty has all five starters back for another 32-Splash. UC-Irvine has some retooling to do if it wants to make it 4 out of 5 in the BIG WEST with a Splash finish to boot. In the past, a three-time IVY title champ has been able to break through with a Splash win come March - - that's definitely achievable for this year's Havard team with five starters back (and more). Three-time AMERICA EAST title champ Vermont has accomplished nearly everything except an NCAA Splash in the career of star fAnthony Lamb. Similarly, New Mexico State's in-conference dominance of the WAC has yet to lead to a postseason breakthrough.
The jury is still out on the trend of 1BC Graduate Transfer players moving up to B-Major programs. So far, we've seen valuable role players at best. (gMatt Mooney made the jump last year from being tMike Daum(South Dakota State)'s foil in the SUMMIT at South Dakota to a key figure in BIG12/Texas Tech's run to National Runner-Up; but we haven't seen anyone become an Option No.1 headliner as yet.) cKerry Blackshear Jr.'s sideways move from Virginia Tech to reloaded Florida could well make him GT Of The Year (but keep an eye on gMax Hazzard's jump up from 32-Splash UC-Irvine to reloaded Arizona).
There's almost nowhere to go but down for BIG 10 (co-)title/TiTo champ Michigan State/Tom Izzo after last year's Final 4 finish, but pWinston alone is enough to expect a repeat performance. While Memphis and cWiseman will be the Shiny New Toy to play with this year, don't be surprised if it's Old Reliable Duke/Mike Krzyzewski that manage to cut down the nets in April as they try to do the 2015 Baby Blues one better with a sophomore point guard leading four GC stars all the way.

Tuesday's CHAMPIONS CLASSIC (this year at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in New York) is traditionally the "Coming Out Party" for the top Golden Child "Debutantes". Shockingly, neither Michigan State nor Kansas has a SuperFrosh who qualifies. Kentucky expects/needs a lot from both fKahlil Whitney and gTyrese Maxey while Duke can take its time waiting for any and/or all of cVernon Carey, fMatthew Hurt, fWendell Moore and bCassius Stanley to blossom.
Florida (GT cKerry Blackshear Jr.; GC gScottie Lewis) has expectations that go well past beating depleted Florida State in this year's SUNSHINE SHOWDOWN (Sunday). Host Ohio State (GC fE.J. Liddell) should have too much for Cincinnati's Cumberland Cousins in their new annual grudge match (Wednesday). Washington's GC frontcourt duo (fIsaiah Stewart and fJaden McDaniels) won't have an easy opener against Baylor at the ARMED FORCES CLASSIC (Friday).
This year's PAC-12 CHINA GAME (Friday) between Colorado and Arizona State won't count towards the conference standings.
Look for a 4-4 split in this year's WAC/SUMMIT CHALLENGE (with WAC/New Mexico State[over Denver] and SUMMIT/Oral Roberts[over Chicago State] both able to pull off road wins).

This year, we're on the road HOME TO ATLANTA!!! (P.S. I NEED TICKETS!!!)

Welcome back, y'all!

19 Apr 9 - The Redemption (II) (POSTSEASON)

Volume XXIII, No. 23 - 19 Apr 9: POSTSEASON The Redemption (II) In the first National Semifinal, [S1]Virginia controlled the pace but [M5]Auburn hung close and even led 31-28 at the break. The A-Tigers started the second half sluggishly and the Cavaliers eeked out to a 50-43 lead with eight minutes to go and still seemed to have things well in hand with a 57-47 lead with just five left. But Aub turned the game around entirely, scoring 14-straight points, to lead 61-57 with only :15 on the clock. One more about face saw Kyle Guy sink a three-pointer, get fouled shooting a three at the buzzer, and then proceed to sink all three free throws for the win, 63-62 - - WOW! (All in all, a miraculous escape by UVa and then the replay shows the refs missed a huge double-dribble call bringing the ball up the floor - - Yikes.)      In the second Semi, [W3]Texas Tech's smothering defense was on display against [E2]Michigan State as the first half ended, 23-21. In the second half, the Red Raiders stretched the lead to as much as 48-35 with under ten minutes to go. The MS-Spartans made one push to get to within 51-52 with three minutes left. But bJarrett Culver led a 9-0 close for the win, 61-51. (Matt Mooney[22p] made the best case of anyone for the otherwise vacant spot as Graduate Transfer Of The Year. This time last year, he was the in-conference foil at South Dakot for xMike Daum at South Dakota State. While he made the GT jump to B-Major Texas Tech, xDaum stayed behind to win the 1BC SUMMIT regular season title only to miss out on even making the NCAA tourney this year.)      The National Championship was a defensive struggle from the start: it was only 3-2 after the first four minutes. [W3]Texas Tech couldn't score a field goal for the first seven minutes as [S1]Virginia led 17-7 midway through the first half. Three quick threes loosened things up as the Red Raiders had tied it at 19-19 with seven to go. The Cavaliers led 32-29 at the break and a good start to the second half put them up 38-29 right away. TxT wouldn't go away, though, and things were tied again at 59-59 with just three minutes left; and it was gut-check time for both teams the rest of the way until things were tied 68-68 at the end of regulation. UVa pulled away in the overtime on 12-for-12 free-throw shooting to win, 85-77(OT). bDe'Andre Hunter(27p7r) led the Wahoos, but Kyle Guy(24p0a) was named Most Outstanding Player for his overall play in both Final Four games. tJarrett Culver(15p6a9r;5/22fg,0/6 3s) struggled to lead TxT. Virginia became only the second team to win the title without ever having to face a No.1- or No.2-seed (after UNLV did so in 1990). If you believe in karma, destiny and redemption, you certainly have that story line with Virginia. Ralph Sampson's '83 Cavalier team (that lost to {Chaminade} in the biggest regular-season upset in history) didn't even make the Final Four. (They made it The Year After him in '84.) Last year's team (which suffered the biggest postseason upset in history losing to 16th-seed Marlyand-Baltimore County as a No.1 seed) had three holdovers (Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy and De'Andre Hunter) who now have claimed the ultimate prize, the NCAA National Championship. Doesn't get any better than that. The B-Majors once again took until the Elite 8 to lock out everyone else from the NCAAs (par for the course). The ACC (15-6, led by 6-0 UVa, one Elite 8, three Sweet 16s) overtook the top of the conference ratings after its strong postseason; the BIG 10 (13-8, Final 4 MichSt, one E8, one S16) wound up second overall; the BIG 12 (8-6, F4 TxT) moved up to third overall while the SEC (12-7, F4 Aub, one E8, two S16s) slipped to fourth; the BIG EAST (2-4, no one past the second round) barely hung onto its status. (The MAC [1-1] lost its BM rating, going 1-4 overall in the postseason.)      The AMERICAN (4-4, one S16), WEST COAST (3-2, one E8) and PACIFIC-12 (4-3, one S16) all were the best among Mid-Majors; the SOUTHERN (1-1, one 32-Splash), OHIO VALLEY (2-2, one 32S) both at least made a Splash; the MISSOURI VALLEY (0-1), IVY LEAGUE (0-1), ATLANTIC 10 (0-2), WAC (0-1) all made no impact.      In 1BC-land, none of the Red Swirl made an impact - - the SUN BELT (0-1), disappointing MOUNTAIN WEST (0-2), HORIZON (0-1), COLONIAL (0-1) and CONFERENCE USA (0-1) all went oh-fer. It was left to "Top Of The Flops" to breakthrough as both the BIG WEST (1-1, one 32S) and ATLANTIC SUN (1-1, one 32S) made Splashes; otherwise, the PATRIOT (0-1), SUMMIT (0-1), BIG SOUTH (0-1), AMERICA EAST (0-1), SOUTHLAND (0-1), METRO ATLANTIC (0-1), NORTHEAST (0-1), BIG SKY (0-1) all made no impression; and neither the SWAC (0-1) or MEAC (0-1) could get out of the Play-In game. - - - - - - In the NIT, BIG12[6]/[s2]Texas turned the tables on state-rival conferencemate BIG12/[w1]TCU in the semis (58-44) while 1BC darling A-SUN/[e5]Lipscomb extended its magical run, beating AMER/[m6]Wichita State (71-64 as Garrison Mathews[34p5r] starred again). In the final, the Longhorns were able to corral Mathews to win going away (81-66 led by MOP: Kerwin Roach as xDylan Osetkowski[19p5a11r] starred). (A B-Major also-ran winning the NIT has been par for the course for a while now.)      With only a 16-team draw, the CBI can seem the least prestigious of the postseason tourneys; but it does draw a few BM and MM teams and its "Best of 3" Championship Final Series gives it an extra cachet. AMER[7b]/[sA1]South Florida won the first game at home against BIGE/[mA1]DePaul (@63-61 on David Collins' game-winner); then, the Blue Demons rallied at home to win in Game Two in overtime (@100-96[OT] as gMax Strus[32p] and cPaul Reed[28p16r] both dueled 35p8a from pLaQuincy Rideau and 26p13r from cAlexis Yetna); but the SF-Bulls controlled the rubber game from the start to claim the crown on the road (77-@65 as MVP: David Collins[19p5a8r] led the way). (A Mid-Major also-ran winning CBI is par for the course as well.)      In the CIT, CUSA[6a]/[1x]Marshall edged BIGS/Hampton (@80-78 as tJon Elmore[28p5a9r] starred) in the semis while HORIZ/Green Bay edged SWAC/Texas Southern in overtime (@87-86[OT] as tSandy Cohen III[28p7a8r] starred). In the final, Marsh rallied at home to win going away against GBay (@90-70 behind MVP: pC.J. Burks[28p6a7r]). Overall, though, it was gJon Elmore who led the Thundering Herd as, this year, he became not only the all-time leading scorer in school history (and CONFERENCE USA history); what's more, together, he and his father, Gay Elmore(VMI) became the all-time leading Father/Son scoring duo in NCAA history (passing Dell Curry[Virginia Tech]/Stephen Curry[Davidson] - - WOW!) (A "slumming" Red Swirl also-ran winning CIT is stronger than usual.) Despite their Mid-Major ratings, the SOUTHERN, MISSOURI VALLEY and IVY LEAGUE only received one NCAA bid each so the BM-MM-1BC split for the NIT got squeezed in the middle 13-6-(7:6) compared to last year's 11-9-12 representation. The BIG 12's 8-1 record (behind champ Tx and semi TCU) saved the bacon for the MM's 18-12 performance. (That's now SEVEN OF EIGHT YEARS for a MM NIT Champ.) Lips' 4-1 run to the final powered the 1BC/Flop's surprising 5-6 showing.      Two "slumming" B-Majors on top of two Mid-Majors is unsually strong for the CBI. Finalist BIGE/DePaul's 4-2 run to the Final Series powered the BM's 5-3 showing; champ AMER/South Florida's 5-1 run was mostly behind the MM's 7-2 finish.      Two Red Swirl finalists in 4-0 CUSA/Marshall and 4-1 HORIZ/Green Bay powered a 10-6 showing; 3-1 BIGS/Hampton and 3-1 SWAC/Texas Southern powered the Flop to a respectable 13-11 finish. Back in 2016, the short-lived VEGAS-16 Tournament had the problem that its 16/8 participating teams had to wait two/three weeks before getting going the final week of the season in the ultimate vacation destination city of Las Vegas. The 3X3U Tournament (now in its second year) works well as a seniors-only prize money event in the Championship destination city of the Final Four. Coaches from every conference have an extra incentive to go to the NABC Convention to support their participating players. It's fun stuff: 10-minute games to 21 (1 point per regular field goal, 2 points for a "3-pointer"). Games were streamed live on Twitter until the semis/final, which were shown on ESPN2. Four-man teams from each of the 32 conferences; eight seeded groups of four teams each played round-robin pool play on Friday and Saturday -- winning teams shared $1000/win; top two teams from each pool made the Round of 16 knockout stage on Sunday. [1]BIG 12 and [5]BIG EAST were the only B-Major teams not to make the Round of 16 (but neither made it to the quarters). Eventually, it was [18]COLONIAL (the only league whose four participants were each 1st-team all-conference: MVP: gJustin Wright-Foreman[Hofstra], fJarrell Brantley[College of Charleston], cDevontae Cacok[UNC-Wilmington], pVasa Pusica[Northeastern]) who went 7-0 on the weekend (including beating [8]WEST COAST in the final, 21-13) to share $100,000 ... NICE! - - - - - - Overall, the ACC's postseason prowess (three No.1 seeds, 18-8 overall, NCAA Champ, one E8, three S16s) came almost entirely in the NCAA but was enough to push it into the top spot in the final ratings (with a whopping 101-40 record in top interconference matchups). Likewise, the BIG 10 (91-38, 16-10 postseason, one F4, one E8, one S16) didn't do much outside the NCAAs, either. The BIG 12 (79-34, 17-8, one F4, NIT Champ) moved up mostly thanks to its 8-1 NIT showing. The SEC (87-48, 13-9, one F4, one E8, two S16s) didn't do anything beyond the NCAAs. The BIG EAST (56-36, 8-11, CBI finalist) did nothing below the "Bronze Medal" level of the postseason. The AMERICAN (62-35, 12-7, one S16, NIT semi, CBI Champ) led the way in the postseason among Mid-Majors. CONFERENCE USA (34-45, 5-5, CIT Champ) made it five-straight postseasons with something to show for itself (four 32S, CBI Champ last year, CIT Champ this year) as tops in the Red Swirl. The ATLANTIC SUN (21-38, 6-3, one 32S, NITfinal) was by far the best 1BC league in the postseason (despite its Flop rating overall).      The focus was almost entirely back on the court for this season of College Basketball - - (only Will Wade's late-season suspension for offering money to a recruit was a holdover from last year's scandals). Kansas/Bill Self's record-setting streak of fourteen-straight regular season titles in the BIG 12 was finally snapped (by the combo of Texas Tech [which went on to make its first-ever Final Four] and arch-/state-rival Kansas State as well). Gonzaga's regular season dominance of the WEST COAST extended to EIGHTEEN OF NINETEEN TITLES (but the TiTo crown streak was snapped at six). The big headline was The Redemption of the University of Virginia program (and coach Tony Bennett) rebounding from last year's greatest NCAA upset of all time to win the National Championship (with much the same squad). Auburn's late-season run to the SEC tournament crown all the way to its first-ever Final Four was a fun ride.      Chris Beard validated his (regular season) Coach Of The Year nod by taking Texas Tech to its first-ever Final Four. Player Of The Year/Golden Child Of The Year fZion Williamson was a once-in-a-generation spectacle to behold, but he doesn't actually have much hardware on his resume compared to past all-time SuperFrosh. (Yes, you can argue that his mid-season injury cost Duke a shot at the regular season ACC title. He does have the ACC tourney crown; but that squeak win in the final foretold endplay performances in the NCAAs that fell short in the Regional Final.) For his heroics in the National Semifinal, bMatt Mooney(Texas Tech) garnered the (nearly vacant) Graduate Transfer Of The Year award. Late-moment heroics made gKyle Guy(Virginia) the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. - - - - - - Once again, I got terribly behind in writing the weekly columns (only making it until the end of January in real time). (The entire rest of the regular season columns were written anachronistcally [two years later in 2020, actually] in as faithful a way as possible as to how I would have perceived things at the proper concurrent time. [The postseason comments were largely contemporary as I conducted the Hoops Contest.]) Much like Tony Bennett outdid his father, Dick, in going all the way in the NCAA tournament, so did Nilo Cobau avenge his father's final-game loss last year to win this year's Hoops Contest over a field of 136 contestants! It's just a one-year sample, but so far so good for the new NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool), which scored 126,-26 (as compared to the 74.6,-78.9 thirteen-year average for picks based on the old RPI). Thanks, everybody, for reading this year's columns. Hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I still very much enjoy writing them. Next year, it's the Road To ATLANTA!!! (I NEED TICKETS!!!) -- Ron

19 Apr 1 - Blue (Devil) Magic Runs Out (FINAL FOUR)

Volume XXIII, No. 22 - 19 Apr 1: FINAL FOUR Blue (Devil) Magic Runs Out At the EAST Regional in Washington,DC, [E1]Duke had its hands full against conferencemate [E4]Virginia Tech. The Hokies led 38-34 at the break and it was still tight with the D-Blue Devils only leading 62-57 with eight minutes to go. VaTech missed a makeable lob finish that would sent the game into overtime and Duke escaped (75-73 despite 18p16r5a from xKerry Blackshear Jr.). Meanwhile, [E2]Michigan State started fast and led 34-17 deep in the first half; [E3]Louisiana State got as close as 36-40 early in the second half but that was it as the MS-Spartans won going away (80-63 as tAaron Henry[20p6a8r] starred). Thanks to questionable seeding, what could easily have been a matchup in the National Championship took place in the Regional final ... and it didn't disappoint. [E2]MichSt started well and led 14-7 early on but couldn't separate from [E1]Duke; the D-Blue Devils adjusted and led by 9 with five minutes to go with the MS-Spartans leading 34-30 at the break. The second half was tight throughout, tied at 58-58 with six minutes to go; a 5-0 burst put Duke up 66-63 with just two minutes left and a huge three by tKenny Goins gave MSU a 68-66 lead. Going down to the wire for the third(-straight) time wasn't the charm for Duke as [E2]Michigan State edged the D-Blue Devils (68-67 as pCassius Winston[20p10a] starred).      In the WEST Regional at the HONDA CENTER in Anaheim,CA, [W1]Gonzaga and [W4]Florida State faced off for the second-straight year (at the same point of the tournament). This time, the G-Bulldogs got payback on the Seminoles from last year's upset loss. GU pushed the pace early to negate FSU's size, leading 38-27 at the break; FlaSt struggled mightly (shooting 3-for-20 on three-pointers) after that as Gonz won (72-58 only allowing one double-figure scorer). More impressive was [W3]Texas Tech's total shut down of mighty [W2]Michigan (63-44 as the Wolverines only managed 1-for-19 shooting on threes). In the final, the first half was tight throughout with [W1]Gonz leading 37-35 at the break; the second half was much the same, tied at 58-58 with five minutes left; a 5-0 sput gave [E2]Texas Tech a lead it nursed until the end, winning (75-69).      In the MIDWEST Regional at the SPRINT CENTER in Kansas City,MO, [M2]@Kentucky pushed out to a 38-24 lead over [M3]Houston at the break; but the H-Cougars fought back to tie things at 49-49 with four minutes to go; but a 7-0 close by the K-Wildcats ended with a @62-58 win. Meanwhile, [M1]North Carolina only led [M5]Auburn 41-39 at halftime before the A-Tigers turned it on in the second half and won going away over the Tar Heels (97-80 sinking 17 threes as six players posted double-figures). In the final, [M2]@UK started strong but conferencemate [M5]Aub settled in to lead early in the second half; it was tight the rest of the way as regulation finished tied 60-60; the ovetime was all AU, who beat @UK (77-@71[OT] as pJared Harper[26p5a] starred despite 28p13r5to from cP.J. Washington).      In the SOUTH Regional in Louisville,KY, [S1]Virginia couldn't separate from "Cinderella" [S12]Oregon, tight throughout and still tied 45-45 with five minutes to go; from there, the Cavaliers executed and the Ducks didn't as [S1]UVa held on to win (53-49). Meanwhile, [S3]Purdue nearly ran [S2]Tennessee out of the gym in the first half, leading by 15 just before the break; but the Volunteers came all the way back to tie things up at 65-65 with six minutes left; both teams were great down the stretch but only the Boilermakers could keep up that high level in overtime, winning (99-94[OT] as gRyan Cline[27p4a] starred). In the final, it was your classic One-Man-Show from [S3]Purdue versus all-out team effort from [S1]Virginia; the Boilers led by 10 early on but the Cavs closed to 29-30 at the half; the second half was tight throughout as a wild broken play saw [S1]UVa send the game into overtime, tied at 70-70; a costly turnover ended up dooming [S3]Purd as the Wahoos won (80-75[OT] as xKyle Guy[25p10r] starred despite 42p;10/13 3s from gCarsen Edwards). - - - - - - It might not be the ones we expected in a couple of cases, but each of the top four conferences pushed a representative through to the Final Four - - kind of fitting in the stable year of The Carousel. No National Championship or even a Final Four for once-in-a-generation talent fZion Williamson after all (and the Star of Stars from the middle weekend was gCarsen Edwards, actually). (I try hard not to "be happy for the Good Guys" [because there's so much bias that goes into defining the "Good Guys"]. But ... making the Final Four does exorcise the demons from the Virginia program [and coach Tony Bennett] after last year's ignominy. Doesn't matter if they don't win it all. Getting your F4 ticket punched is the definition of elite success.) Meanwhile, it's the first-ever trip to the Final Four for both Auburn and Texas Tech. Bruce Pearl's career has been all over the map with highs, lows and scandals but he's a "Made" coach now and forever. For Chris Beard, the rise has been meteoric: 32-Splash in his first year at Little Rock in 2016 and now Elite 8/Final 4 in back-to-back years at Texas Tech in just his fourth year. Where does he go from here? Does he follow the path of Greg Marshall(Winthrop/Wichita State) and stay put; or does he follow Shaka Smart(VCU/Texas) and go for a name-brand job? (Seems like Final 4 at a B-Major school should be good enough for the long haul.) Oh, by the way, that's 8 Final Fours for Tom Izzo. - - - - - - The NIT was a tale of two paths (to New York). 1BC [e5]ASUN/Lipscomb and [m6]AMER/Wichita State each earned their third-straight road win to make the semifinals. The L-Bisons edged host [e2]ACC/N.C. State (94-@93 on pKenny Cooper's game-winner as tGarrison Mathews[44p8r] dueled 34p9r;15/222fg from fTorin Dorn) -- tMathews broke the opponent scoring record for Reynolds Coliseum (more than all the great ACC legends who played there). The Wheat Shockers beat host [m1]BIG10/Indiana (73-@63). On the other hand, the BIG 12 sent two teams to the semifinals thanks to their third-straight home game win each. [w1]BIG12/TCU handled [w2]BIGE/Creighton (@71-58 as bKouat Noi[25p7r] starred) while conferencemate [s2]BIG12/Texas handled [s4]PAC12/Colorado (@68-55).      In the CBI quarterfinals, [eB1]SUNB/Coastal Carolina road-routed host [eA1]BIG12/West Virginia (109-@91 on pDevante' Jones[32p7a7r] star turn). Meanwhile, [mA1]BIGE/DePaul outpaced [mB1]BIGS/Longwood (@97-89 as bMax Strus[38p5r;15/21fg] starred). Elsewhere, [sA1]AMER/South Florida handled [sB1]WAC/Utah Valley (@66-57) and [wA2]WCC/Loyola Marymount thumped [wB1]IVY/Brown (@81-63). In the semis, [sA1]AMER/SFla shut down [wA2]WCC/LoyMmt (@56-47 allowing no double-figure scorers) while [mA1]BIGE/DPaul beat [eB1]SUNB/CoCar (@92-87).      In the CIT, both SWAC/Texas Southern (over host WAC/Texas-Rio Grande Valley, 94-@85 as cJeremy Combs[27p17r] dominated) and WAC/Cal State-Bakersfield (over host SKY/Southern Utah, 70-67) joined BIGS/Presbyterian with road wins in the second round. Meanwhile, both HORIZ/Green Bay (past CUSA/Florida International, @98-68 as xSandy Cohen III[20p8a10r] starred) and BIGS/Hampton (past conferencemate BIGS/Charleston Southern, @73-67 despite 21p5a8r from tChristian Keeling) also advanced at home. Getting byes into the quarterfinals (and home games, to boot) didn't help either [1x]SUNB/Louisiana-Monroe (lost in triple-overtime to SWAC/TxSo, @102-108[3OT] as pTyrik Armstrong[32p8a] and cJeremy Combs[27p11r] both dueled 22p5a10r from xTravis Munnings) or [1x]ASUN/New Jersey Tech (lost @70-82 to BIGS/Hamp); only [1x]CUSA/Marshall was able to take advantage, beating BIGS/Presb (@83-66). HORIZ/GBay earned its way into the semis, beating WAC/CSB (@80-65). - - - - - - The BIG 12 (4-1) is still going strong with three teams still alive for Week Three of the postseason (one NCAA semifinalist [Texas Tech] and two in the NIT [TCU and Texas]). (Like the BIG 10 last week, the ACC and SEC both had to "eat one of their own" in the NCAAs.) The BIG EAST, the lone B-Major that doesn't have a Final Four representative, at least has a finalist in the CBI (DePaul, with home court advantage in the Best of Three series, to boot).      The AMERICAN (3-1) is the only Mid-Major still playing with both an NIT semifinalist (Wichita State) and a CBI finalist (South Florida).      The Red Swirl HORIZON (Green Bay) and CONFERENCE USA (Marshall) each managed to place a team in the semis of the all-1BC CIT. Meanwhile, the "Flop" ATLANTIC SUN continued its impressive postseason sending Lipscomb to the NIT semis in NYC. Kudos as well to the Flop BIG SOUTH (Hampton, after "eating one of its own") and SWAC (Texas Southern) for earning spots in the CIT semis.      (All together that's four teams from the state of Texas still going ... [and two from Virginia]!) - - - - - - Having slain The Giant just to get to the Final Four, will [E2]Michigan State have a letdown against surprising [W3]Texas Tech? Will [S1]Virginia feel The Monkey is off its back by just making the Final Four (or is it still "NCAA title or bust")? No one has had a better NCAA run than [M5]Auburn (with four Top-25 wins). (I like MichSt over UVa in the final; but any other scenario wouldn't surprise me all that much, frankly.)      There's no reason 1BC [e5]ASUN/Lipscomb can't win one more in the NIT (past [m6]AMER/Wichita State), but that'll probably be it. (Look for [w1]BIG12/TCU to three-sweep conferencemate [s2]BIG12/Texas in the other semi and be too much for the L/Bisons in the final.)      ([mA1]BIGE/DePaul has looked less vulnerable than [sA1]AMER/South Florida so far in the CBI [and gets the rubber game at home in the "Best of Three" final series, to boot] - - 'Nuff said.)      In the CIT, [1x]CUSA/Marshall (hosting MEAC/Hampton) and HORIZ/Green Bay (hosting SWAC/Texas Southern) both have road-tested opponents in the semis. (Look for both home teams to squeak out wins with Marsh claiming the crown as a Consolation Prize in a "What Might Have Been" season.)      It's the second year for the (prize money) 3X3U Tournament. Four-man teams (of seniors who have exhausted their eligibility) representing each of the 32 conferences are put into 8 pools (with "S-curve" seeding based on their own ratings). Friday and Saturday will consist of round-robin games withing each pool. On Sunday, the top two teams from each pool will be seeded into a 16-team bracket and play all day until they reach a champion. -- Ron

19 Mar25 - Trickle-Down Hoop-onomics (Cinder-who?) (SWEET SIXTEEN)

Volume XXIII, No. 21 - 19 Mar25: SWEET SIXTEEN Trickle-Down Hoop-onomics (Cinder-who?) When the dust settled at the end of Round Two of the NCAA tournament, things had gone almost entirely according to form. All of the Top 12 seeds made it through (and only two No.4-seeds {the BIG 12's [M4]Kansas and [S4]Kansas State} didn't). Nearly the entire preseason Carousel made it through the first weekend (minus [M4]Kans and [W7]Nevada). Only [S12]Oregon could technically be called a Cinderella team (but the Ducks were Preseason Top 25). (In fact, things went so "chalk" that the NCAA's NET picks are Top-10 in the Hoops Contest!)      That said, the Splashworthy 1BCs all did themselves proud, scoring five first-round wins and no one getting blown out. The ACC parlayed 7 bids into 5 spots in the Sweet 16, going 5-2 in Round One and 5-0 in Round Two. The league's "home" Pod moved south to Columbia,SC this year, but it still did its job, seeing both [E1]@Duke (barely) and [S1]Virginia (comfortably) through the first weekend. The D-Blue Devils thumped [E16a]North Dakota State (@85-62 as cR.J. Barrett[26p14r] starred) but had all they could handle in the "Human Interest" matchup with [E9]UCF (coached by former Duke great Johnny Dawkins), (@77-76 as xZion Williamson[32p11r;GWFG] dueled 32p from coach's son gAubrey Dawkins) - - a missed alley-oop dunk and late-three-pointer may have saved the day for the Dukies. The Cavaliers had an easier go of it, dumping [S16]Gardner-Webb (71-56) and handling [S9]Oklahoma (63-51) thanks to solid defense. Playing in Columbus,OH was no issue for [M1]North Carolina, thumping [M16]Iona (88-73) and dumping [M9]Washington (81-59) as the Tar Heels dominated the boards against both opponents. [W4]Florida State took care of two quality 1BC foes in Hartford,CT, beating [W13]@Vermont (76-@69 despite 16 threes from the V-Catamounts) and thumping [W12]Murray State (90-62 despite 28p4a5r from bJa Morant). [E4]Virginia Tech beat [E13]St. Louis (66-52) and also [E12]Liberty (67-58).      The SEC put 4 of 7 teams into the second week, going 5-2 and 4-1. [M5]Auburn continued its roll from winning the conference tournament, first surviving the upset bid of [M12]New Mexico State (78-77) and then handling [M4]Kansas (89-75 despite 25p10r3a from xDedric Lawson) in the biggest upset of the weekend. "A-OK" as well for the "home" Pod in Jacksonville,FL as both [E3]LSU (barely) and [M2]@Kentucky advanced. The LS-Tigers survived two endplays, first edging [E14]Yale (79-74) and also [E6]Maryland (69-67 on pTremont Waters' game-winner). The K-Wildcats had no trouble with [M15]Abilene Christian, dumping (@79-44 on bKeldon Johnson[25p6r] star turn) and cooled off [M7]Wofford (@62-56 holding all-time three-point-leader Fletcher Magee to 0/12 on threes). [S2]Tennessee didn't have it so easy in Columbus,OH, only beating [S15]Colgate (77-70 despite 15 threes from the C-Raiders and 30p4a from pJordan Burns) and only edging [S10]Iowa in overtime (83-77[OT] after leading by 25 in the first half). In addition, [W10]Florida scored a first-round upset over [W7]Nevada (70-61 as the N-Wolf_Pack only managed 4 assists).      The BIG 10 only managed 3 Sweet 16 teams after going 7-1 in Round One but just 3-4 in Round Two (including one head-to-head knockout). [S3]Purdue took care of business in Hartford,CT, handling [S14]Old Dominion (61-48) and thumping [S6]Villanova (87-61 behind 16 threes) as bCarsen Edwards averaged 34p6r in two games. The "home" Pod in Des Moines,IA served its purpose as both [E2]Michigan State and [W2]Michigan had it easy. The MS-Spartans handled [E15]Bradley (76-65 on gCassius Winston[26p4a]'s star turn) and dumped conferencemate [E10]Minnesota (70-50 dominating the boards 45-19 despite 27p4a from gAmir Coffey). The Wolverines dumped both [W15]Montana (74-55) and [W10]Florida (64-49). In addition, [M11]Ohio State (edging [M6]Iowa State 62-59 in Tulsa,OK), [S10]Iowa (beating [S7]@Cincinnati 79-@72 in Columbus,OH) and [E10]Minnesota (handling [E7]Louisville 86-76 as coach Richard Pitino got some revenge against the school that fired his dad, Rick, last year) all scored first-round upsets. Not to mention [E6]Maryland edging [E11a]Belmont (79-77 despite 35p11r from xDylan Windler) as expected.      The BIG 12 got just 1 team through the first weekend, going 4-2 at first but then only 1-3. The "home" Pod in Tulsa,OK helped [W3]@Texas Tech breeze through two wins, but that was it. The Red Raiders dumped both [W14]Northern Kentucky (@72-57) and [W6]Buffalo (@78-58) as tJarrett Culver averaged 23p6a9r in two games. For good measure, [W9]Baylor beat [W8]Syracuse (78-69 sinking 16-for-34 threes despite 25p3a from gElijah Hughes) and [S9]Oklahoma thumped [S8]Mississippi (95-72 as xKristian Doolittle[19p15r5a] starred) in the first round. Not to mention [M4]Kansas, who dumped [M13]Northeastern (87-53 as xDedric Lawson[25p11r] starred).      The AMERICAN pushed 1 of 4 teams through to the Sweet 16, going (0-1), 2-1 and 1-1. [M3]Houston had two easy wins in Tulsa,OK, dumping both [M14]Georgia State (84-55 as pCorey Davis Jr.[26p6a7r] starred) and [M11]Ohio State (74-59). For good mesure, [E9]UCF dumped [E8]VCU (73-58 as cTacko Fall[13p18r5b] dominated) in the first round for its first-ever NCAA win.      The PACIFIC-12 managed 1 team out of 3 into the second week, going (1-0), 2-1 and 1-1. [S12]Oregon continued its roll from winning the conference tournament, shocking [S5]Wisconsin (72-54) and dumping upstart [S13]@UC-Irvine (73-@54). For good measure, [M9]Washington thumped [M8]Utah St (78-61) in the first round. Don't forget [W11a]Arizona State beat [W11b]St. John's (74-65 despite 25p4a from gShamorie Ponds) in the Play-In game.      The WEST COAST placed 1 team of 2 teams into the Sweet 16, going 1-1 and 1-0. As expected, juggernaut [W1]Gonzaga cruised past [W16b]Fairleigh Dickinson (87-49 controlling the boards 47-30) and [W9]Baylor (83-71 as cBrandon Clarke[36p8r5b;15/18fg] dominated). The Splashworthy 1BCs didn't disappoint, pulling off 5 first-round wins. [S13]@BIGW/UC-Irvine surprised [S4]Kansas State (@70-64) for its first-ever NCAA win. More shocking still, [E12]A-SUN/Liberty edged [E5]Mississippi State (80-76 on Caleb Homesley[30p]'s star turn) also for its first-ever NCAA win. Less shocking perhaps, [W12]{two-bid}OVC/Murray State thumped [W5]Marquette (83-64 on xJa Morant[17p16a11r]'s triple-double despite 26p2a from gMarkus Howard). Strong seeds meant their wins weren't technically upsets, still [M7]SOCON/Wofford came through, thumping [M10]Seton Hall (84-68 despite 27p3a from gMyles Powell) as gFletcher Magee became the all-time NCAA leader in career three-pointers (509). Also, [W6]Buffalo thumped [W11a]Arizona State (91-74 despite 22p8r3a from tZylan Cheatham as Sun Devil coach Bobby Hurley got no joy losing to his former club). Don't forget that [E11a]{two-bid}OVC/Belmont beat [E11b]Temple (81-70 led by gKevin McClain[29p]) in the Play-In game. The disappointing BIG EAST went (0-1), 1-2 and 0-1, only managing [S6]Villanova edging [S11]St. Mary's (61-57) in the first round.      The MISSOURI VALLEY (0-1), IVY LEAGUE (0-1) and ATLANTIC 10 (0-2) all made no impression despite their Mid-Major ratings.      The MOUNTAIN WEST's high-profile standard-bearers both went belly-up, 0-2.      The NORTHEAST got a Play-In win as [W16b]Fairleigh Dickinson "upset" [W16a]SWAC/Prairie View A&M (82-76 as gDarnell Edge[33p] dueled 26p5r from bGary Blackston). The SUMMIT's Play-In was "according to seed" as [E16a]North Dakota State edged [E16b]MEAC/North Carolina Central (78-74 despite 20p16r from cRaasean Davis). - - - - - - In the NIT, 1BC title champs [s8]MEAC/Norfolk State (over [s1]SEC/Alabama, 80-@79[OT] as pDerrik Jamerson[25p7r;GWFTs] starred) and [e6]IVY/Harvard (over [e3]BIGE/Georgetown, 71-@68) both scored road wins at B-Major hosts. [e5]ASUN/Lipscomb did almost as well (beating Mid-Major host [e4]A10/Davidson, 89-@81 despite 31p7r from bKellan Grady). [m6]AMER/Wichita State's road win at touted 1BC [m3]SOCON/Furman (76-@70 despite 27p8r5a from tMatt Rafferty) was a surprise as was [s4]BIGE/Xavier's comfortable home win over B-Major-rated [s6]MAC/Toledo (@78-64 as xNaji Marshall[20p21r6a] dominated). [m5]SEC/Arkansas' road win at [m4]BIGE/Providence (84-@72) was the only other first-round result that didn't follow form. In the second round, only [e5]ASUN/Lipscomb (86-@69 over [e1]SOCON/UNC-Greensboro) and [m6]AMER/Wichita State (63-@55 over [m2]ACC/Clemson) broke through on the road.      In the CBI, Only [wA2]WCC/Loyola Marymount won on the road, edging at still-qualifying [sA1]WAC/{California Baptist}, 56-@55.      In the CIT, SKY/Southern Utah took out favorite MVC/Drake (@80-73[OT]). In specialty events, SUNB/Louisiana-Monroe beat MAC/Kent State to win the LOU HENSON CLASSIC (@87-77 behind MVP Travis Munnings[28p4a9r]); HORIZ/Green Bay won on the road at SOCON/East Tennessee State to win the HUGH DURHAM CLASSIC (102-@94 behind MVP Sandy Cohen III[29p6a]); CUSA/Marshall beat HORIZ/IUPUI to win the JIM PHELAN CLASSIC (@78-73 behind MVP xJon Elmore[22p7a10r]); WAC/Cal State-Bakersfield won on the road at BIGW/Cal State-Fullerton to win the RILEY WALLACE CLASSIC (66-@58 behind MVP cJames Suber); and BIGS/Hampton beat NEC/St. Francis(New York) to win the JOHN McLENDON CLASSIC (@81-72 behind MVP gTrevond Barnes). Also claiming road wins, BIGS/Presbyterian won on the road at WAC/Seattle (73-@68); CUSA/Florida International won on the road at SUNB/Texas State (87-@81 as 5-10 bBrian Beard Jr.[29p3a] countered 27p5r from bTre'Larenz Nottingham); and SWAC/Texas Southern edged in overtime on the road at SLAND/New Orleans (95-@89[OT]). - - - - - - The BIG 12 made up for its 5-5 record in the NCAAs by going 4-0 in the NIT, placing two teams into the quarterfinals after home wins by [w1]TCU (over [w8]Sam Houston State, @82-69; and [w4]Nebraska, @88-72 as tDesmond Bane[30p8r] starred) and [s2]Texas (over [s7]South Dakota State, @79-73 despite 25p11r from xMike Daum; and [s3]Xavier, @78-76[OT] as tKevin Roach[21p6a8r] starred). The BIG EAST's poor NCAA showing was echoed by a mediocre 3-4 performance in the NIT to boot. The Flop-rated ATLANTIC SUN was spectacular, going 4-1 overall on the week, including Liberty's 32-Splash upset of SEC/MissSt in the NCAAs and Lipscomb's two road wins (at A10/David and SOCON/UNCG) to reach the quarterfinals of the NIT; not to mention New Jersey Tech's first-round win in the CIT over MAAC/Quinnipiac (@92-81 as bZach Cooks[34p6r] dueled 29p8r from tCameron Young). Also noteworthy was the Flop BIG SOUTH's 5-2 record, highlighted by Longwood's home win in CBI (over CUSA/Southern Mississippi, @90-68) and four wins in the CIT by Hamp and Presby as well as Charleston Southern (past CUSA/Florida Atlantic, @68-66) [and Presby's second-round road win at Robert Morris (77-@70)].      Hope you caught the last light from the stars of the Naismith Meteor Shower as the likes of cEthan Happ(Wisconsin) saw his college career end before the second week of the NCAAs.     Some of the greatest Off-Broadway stars took their final bow in the NIT: xMike Daum(25p11r in [s7]South Dakota State's 73-@79 loss at [s2]Texas), gChris Clemons(32p1a in [e8]Campbell's 69-@84 loss at [e1]UNC-Greensboro) and bJustin Wright-Foreman(29p5a6r in [e7]Hoftra's 78-@84 loss at [e2]N.C. State). (I've said it before: It's great that the NIT gives automatic bid to regular season title champs; but I wish they'd go one step further and give them home games so that these kind of program legends could have their curtain call in front of the home fans.) - - - - - - [S1]Virginia has looked solid twice and gets a break with "Cinderella" [S12]Oregon up next with hot-and-cold [S2]Tennessee or One-Man-Show [S3]Purdue(bCarsen Edwards) after that. [E1]Duke suddenly looks less than dominant and has a tough-matchup conferencemate [E4]Virginia Tech up first while dominant [E2]Michigan State looms in wait after that. [W1]Gonzaga gets payback from last year up next against [W4]Florida State and then a tougher task getting past [W2]Michigan or easier [W3]Texas Tech after that. [M1]North Carolina won't mind at all running with [M5]Auburn up next but a rematch with much-improved [M2]@Kentucky will be a tough ask as defense-minded [M3]Houston can't keep pace. (Even after seeing two rounds of tournament play, I'm not sure I see a clear favorite. Only [W2]Mich, [M3]Hous and [S12]Ore have had two worry-free blowouts on their way into the Sweet 16. Let's go with [W1]Gonz, [E1]Duke, [S2]Tenn and [M1]UNC. [E1]Duke over [S2]Tenn still looks good to me.)      In the NIT, look for an all B-Major quartet to make it to New York: [e2]ACC/North Carolina State, [m1]BIG10/Indiana, [w1]BIG12/TCU and [s2]BIG12/Texas (but [e5]ASUN/Lipscomb is the only team left besides NCSt that is still worth rating at this point).      In the CBI, "slumming" B-Majors [eA1]BIG12/West Virginia and [mA1]BIGE/DePaul still look like the favorites.      In the CIT, [1x]CUSA/Marshall and [1x]Lousiana-Monroe look good (and both have byes into the quarterfinals, along with [1x]New Jersey Tech). Road Warrior HORIZ/Green Bay was rewarded with a home game (while BIGW/Cal State-Bakersfield, CUSA/Florida International, BIGS/Presbyterian and SWAC/Texas Southern all have to travel again). (Look for Marsh, LA-Mon, GBay and BIGS/Hampton all to advance to the semifinals.) -- Ron

19 Mar18 - Batman Returns (PRECONTEST)

Volume XXIII, No. 20 - 19 Mar18: PRECONTEST - [] FINAL TOP 25 BALLOT Batman Returns Back on the court for the ACC tournament in Charlotte,NC, [3]@Duke fZion Williamson wasted no time in reasserting his case for Player of the Year. He was a perfect 13-for-13 in the D-Blue Devils' win over [6a]Syracuse (@84-72 as his 29p14r dueled 29p3a from gFrank Howard); then, finally at full strength against arch-rival [1b]@North Carolina, his 31p11r;GWFG was just enough to edge the Tar Heels (@74-@73); [3]@Duke then beat giant-killer [4]Florida State (@73-63) in the final for its second tourney crown in three years. [4]FlaSt earlier edged [5]Virginia Tech in overtime (65-63[OT] on Terance Mann's game-winner) and then stunned [1a]Virginia (69-59 controlling the boards 45-30). Also, [1b]@UNC beat [6b]Louisville (@83-70) and [1a]UVa dumped [8a]North Carolina State (76-@56).      The strongest Anti-Spoiler out there, UNBEATEN 5-GAP [1]Gonzaga laid an egg in the WEST COAST final at ORLEANS ARENA in Las Vegas,NV as [2a]St. Mary's stole an NCAA bid with a 60-47 win.      In the BIG 10 tournament at the UNITED CENTER in Chicago,IL, [5]Maryland fell right away to forgotten [13]Nebraska (63-69). [7]Minnesota surprised [1b]Purdue in the quarters (75-73 as fJordan Murphy[27p8r] starred). [3]Michigan impressed with two rout wins: first, dumping [6]Iowa (74-53 holding the Hawkeyes to woeful 1-for-16 on threes); then dumping [7]Minn (76-49). But it was [1a]Michigan State who came through, beating forgotten [8a]Ohio State (77-70), handling [4]Wisconsin (67-55) and then completing the 3-sweep of [3]Mich (77-70).
In the SEC tournament at the BRIDGESTONE ARENA in Nashville,TN, [6b]Mississippi tripped right away against forgotten [8b]Alabama (57-62 as the Crimson Tide dominated the boards 50-30). All those squeak finishes came back to haunt [1]Louisiana State as [8]Florida edged [1]LSU (76-73 on pAndrew Nemhard's game-winning three despite 26p14r from cNaz Reid). [2b]@Tennessee beat [6a]Mississippi State (@83-76) and then won the much anticipated rubber game against [2a]@Kentucky (@82-@78). But it was [4b]Auburn who won four games, edged [8]Fla in the semis (65-62 on gJared Harper's game-winning three) and then routed a spent [2b]@Tenn squad in the final (84-@64 sinking 15-for-40 three-pointers) to claim the crown (its FIRST IN OVER 20 YEARS [and only its second tourney crown-ever] - - EXCELLENT!)      In the BIG 12 tournament at the SPRINT CENTER in Kansas City,MO, forgotten [10]West Virginia edged [7a]Oklahoma (72-71) and then stunned [1b]Texas Tech (79-72 as fEmmitt Matthews[28p8r] dueled 26p10r from xJarrett Culver). But it was [5]Iowa State who recovered from a late-season slump to thump [4]Baylor (83-66), edge [1a]@Kansas State (63-@59) and handle [3]@Kansas (78-@66) to claim its FOURTH TOURNEY CROWN IN SIX YEARS - - OUTSTANDING!!!      At the AMERICAN tournament in Memphis,TN, [3a]Temple fell right away to [6]Wichita State (74-80 as cMarkis McDuffie[34p12r] starred). [3b]UCF tanked against forgotten host [5]Memphis (55-@79 only managing one double-figure scorer). [1]Houston did edge [5]Memph (61-@58 only allowing 24 percent shooting and 4 total assists); but it was [2]Cincinnati who reversed the season sweep loss to handle [1]Hous in the final (69-57 as tJarron Cumberland[33p8r] starred) for its second-straight tourney crown.      The BIG EAST tournament at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in New York City didn't get the anticipated rematch between its top two teams. [2]Marquette dumped host [7]St. John's (86-@54 as bMarkus Howard[30p7r6to] starred); but then [3a]@Seton Hall spoiled the party with a 81-79 win in the semis. In the final [1]Villanova edged [3a]@Seton (74-@72 despite 25p4a5r from bMyles Powell) for its third-straight tourney crown (and FOURTH IN FIVE YEARS - - OUTSTANDING!!!).      The PACIFIC-12 tournament at T-MOBILE ARENA in Las Vegas,NV turned out to be another bid-stealing disaster for those teams waiting on The Bubble for an At-Large nod. Forgotten [4b]Oregon put it all together winning four times, including rubber-game semis and finals, edging [2]Arizona State in overtime (79-75[OT]) and then dumping [1]Washington in the final (68-48 allowing no double-figure scorers) to claim a Party-Crashing invite to the NCAAs.      At the MID-AMERICAN tournament in Cleveland,OH, [2/W1]Toledo tripped right away against [7a]Northern Illinois (@76-80 on as bEugene German[27p7r] starred). Ultimately, [1/E1]Buffalo had no trouble, thumping forgotten [3]@Bowling Green in the rubber-game final (87-@73 on bJeremy Harris[31p5r]'s star turn). That's now FOUR TOURNEY CROWNS IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS for the B-Bulls - - OUTSTANDING!!!      UNBEATEN 3-GAP [1]Wofford took care of its Anti-Spoiler duties in the SOUTHERN tournament in Asheville,NC, including handling [2]@UNC-Greensboro in the final (70-@58).      At the MOUNTAIN WEST tournament in Las Vegas,NV, [1a]Nevada fell in the semis against [4a]San Diego State (@56-65 only managing 5 assists). That opened the door for [1b]Utah State, which beat [4a]SDgoSt in the final (64-57 only allowing one double-figure scorer).      At the COLONIAL tournament in Charleston,SC, forgotten [2]Northeastern edged host [3]College of Charleston (70-@67 despite 18p10r5a from xJarrell Brantley) and then knocked off [1]Hofstra in the rubber-game final (82-74). (Can't quite call [2]Nen a full Jack Dawson when they were only one game back in the standings, but on paper the N-Huskies are a far cry from the H-Pride.) 3-gap [1]New Mexico State didn't have to test whether it was a true Anti-Spoiler, taking care of business in the WAC tournament at ORLEANS ARENA in Las Vegas,NV, including a rout win in the final over forgotten [3]Grand Canyon (89-47 sinking 17-for-39 threes) to claim its third-straight tourney crown (and EIGHTH IN TEN YEARS for the dominant team of the 2010s - - OUTSTANDING!!!).      At the IVY LEAGUE tournament in New Haven,CT, [1a]Harvard knocked of [4a]Penn in the semis (66-58 despite 25p10r from cA.J. Brodeur). But home court proved to be enough to reverse the season sweep loss for host [1b]Yale in the final as the Y-Bulldogs won (@97-85 as pAlex Copeland[25p7a] dueled 38p4a from gBryce Aiken).      In the ATLANTIC 10 tournament at the BARCLAYS CENTER in Brooklyn,NY, [1]VCU tripped right away against [8]Rhode Island (70-75 despite 26p22r from cMarcus Santos-Silva). That left the door open for another bid-stealing opportunity as fogotten [6a]St. Louis won four games, including edging [4]St. Bonaventure in the final (55-53) to claim a bid-stealing invite to the NCAAs. It's the SIXTH-STRAIGHT YEAR that the A-10 regular season champ has failed to win the tourney (and this perennial Mid-Major league is a prime source of bid-stealers and Party-Crashers year-in and year-out). The top four teams at the SUN BELT tournament in New Orleans,LA all lived up to their seeding. [2a]Texas-Arlington beat forgotten [2b]Georgia Southern in the semis (67-58). But it was [1]Georgia State who shut down forgotten [2c]Texas State (59-46) and then beat [2a]TxArl in the final (73-64) for its second-straight tourney crown.      The HORIZON tournament in Detroit,MI came down to the expected rubber game between the regular season co-champs. [1b]Northern Kentucky won the neutral-site showdown with [1a]Wright State in the final (77-66) to claim its second tourney crown in three years.      The CONFERENCE USA race was close in the regular season with [1]Old Dominion on top after the round-robin phase; and the Monarchs finished in first place after the Group-Seed phase as well. Three tight wins yielded the same outcome as [1]ODU beat forgotten [2a]Western Kentucky in the final (62-56). 5-GAP [1]UC-Irvine had no chance of being a true Anti-Spoiler coming out of the Flop BIG WEST (but no one else deserved to represent the league). No worries - - the Anteaters thumped [2b]Cal State-Fullerton in the final (@92-@64 on 62 percent shooting).      Home court proved to be the difference in the rubber-game final of the PATRIOT LEAGUE as [1b]Colgate outran [1a]Bucknell (@94-80 on pJordan Burns[35p6]'s star turn), earning its FIRST TRIP TO THE NCAAs IN OVER 20 YEARS (back to the days of C-Raider-legend cAdonal Foyle).      In the SUMMIT tournament at the SANFORD PENTAGON in Sioux Falls,SD, with the door already open (after [1]South Dakota State lost right away last week), it was [3b]North Dakota State who came through, including beating [2]Omaha in the final (73-63) to claim a proper Jack Dawson ticket to The Dance.      In the SOUTHLAND tournament at Katy,TX, gap-champ [1]Sam Houston State tripped right away against [3b]New Orleans (@76-79). Forgotten [2]Abilene Christian stepped into the void, thumping [3b]UNO in the final (@77-60) to claim its FIRST-EVER TRIP TO THE NCAAs (in only its second year of full eligibility in Division-I) - - EXCELLENT!!      At the METRO ATLANTIC tournament in Albany,NY, [1]@Iona thumped [6]Monmouth in the final (@81-60 only allowing one double-figure scorer) to claim its FOURTH-STRAIGHT CROWN (TiTo, this year) - - OUTSTANDING!!!      In the AMERICA EAST tournament, home-court advantage helped [1]Vermont dump [3]Maryland-Baltimore County, (@66-49 as tAnthony Lamb[28p9r] starred), reversing the season sweep loss for its second (TiTo) crown in three years - - EXCELLENT!!      In the NORTHEAST tournament, home court was a disadvantage all year between [1b]Fairleigh Dickinson and host [1a]St. Francis(Pennsylvania) as the FD-Knights won (85-@76 on 64 percent shooting) to win the rubber game.      At the BIG SKY tournament in Boise,ID, [1]Montana beat [3]Eastern Washington (68-62) for its second-straight TiTo crown.      At the MEAC tournament in Norfolk,VA, forgotten [3a]North Carolina Central edged host [1]Norfolk State (50-@47) for its third-straight tourney crown (and FOURTH IN FIVE YEARS) - - OUTSTANDING!!!      At the SWAC tournament in Birmingham,AL, [1]Prairie View A&M outran arch-rival [2]Texas Southern (92-86 posting six double-figure scorers) for its FIRST TRIP TO THE NCAAs IN OVER 20 YEARS - - CONGRATS! - - - - - - Here's the full list of Tito champions (including Anti-Spoilers) vs. the bid-stealing Party-Crashers as well as Jack Dawsons who are attending The Dance under false pretenses:
TiTo Party  Crasher Sub/Jack  Dawson

Fair Swap COLON "[1]Hofstra" ([2]+2 Northeastern) That's 19 thoroughbreds against 12(8) imposters - - stronger than last year (15 up, 9[7] down). A very good representation of the best performing teams from the regular season. - - - - - - The new NCAA NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) gets mixed reviews compared to the old RPI. With 68 bids, it's no longer so much about "deserving" teams not getting in as it is about "undeserving" teams that do get in. So how well the teams are seeded is the best evaluation of the NET. Overall, the Top 16 are pretty good; the Bottom 16(+) are "must carry" automatic bids, anyway. In the middle, I'm not so crazy about how teams were seeded. (We'll see whether it makes much of a difference in the Hoops Contest, in the Selection Committee's "expert pick" entry based on NET instead of RPI.) That being said ... there's no explanation that works for me as to how Michigan State isn't the overall No.1 seed - - the MS-Spartans are the TiTo champions of the top-rated B-Major league in the nation (with a 3-sweep of Elite Michigan to boot!) Instead, they're No.6 overall seeded #2 in the East and have to get through Duke just to make the Final Four - - OUTRAGEOUS!! (Yet another case of "Blue Devil Blindness" - - everything revolves around what Duke did and who did what to Duke. It's the "if only fZion weren't out, they wouldn't have lost" argument. Some teams get their losses excused away; some don't.) Instead, all hail overall No.1 [E1]Duke. No particular issue with [S1]Virginia or [M1]North Carolina. [W1]Gonzaga clearly gets the nod because they beat full-strength Duke at MAUI. (I get it; don't agree. For me, the sin of failing to Anti-Spoil and allowing [S11]St. Mary's to steal a bid is way worse than, say, [W2]Michigan falling three times to [E2]MichSt.) Not much changed from the official "Pre-Sixteen" five weeks back - - the top eight teams only shuffled around; Marquette fell from a 3-seed to a 5, Iowa State fell from 4 to 6 and Nevada fell from 4 to 7 while Texas Tech and LSU came from outside up to 3-seeds. I do generally agree that the Top 8 (i.e., The Carousel) were pretty stable all season long. No real qualms with the entire top 16 seeds, really.      The attempt to Rig The System from the BIG 10 by adjusting its conference schedule (increasing from 18 to 20 games) was a whopping success, garnering a record 8 bids (way up from last year's 4). CONFERENCE USA's preseason rating was decidedly in the Red Swirl range, so boosting the calibre of the final four (Group-Seed) games didn't help [2]Western Kentucky get in. For the WEST COAST, reducing its schedule from 18 to 16 games probably wouldn't have gotten [2a]St. Mary's in without its bid-stealing tourney crown win. The Flop SUMMIT didn't get much benefit to its rating by adding head-to-head CHALLENGES with the Mid-Major WAC and fellow Flop BIG SKY (and gets no props for its title-champ South Dakota State's failing to pull off a TiTo double).      Three Spoilers stole bids off the NCAA Bubble: St. Mary's[won WCCt(beat Gonzaga)] as well as forgotten teams Party-Crasher Oregon[won PAC12t(edged Arizona State in OT; dumped Washington) and St. Louis[won A10t]. Among last week's non-lock teams, only Minnesota(edged Purdue) and Seton Hall(edged Marquette) improved their lot. Most everyone else lost to better teams: Iowa(lost Michigan), N.C. State(tanked Virginia), Texas(lost Kansas), UNC-Greensboro(lost Wofford), Belmont(lost Murray State), South Carolina(lost Auburn) and St. John's(tanked Marquette). A couple took a step back: Arizona State(tripped Oregon) and Temple(lost Wichita State).      The "Last Four Teams In" were apparently [E11a]Belmont, [E11b]Temple, [W11a]Arizona State and [W11b]St. John's with the "First Four Teams Out" being UNC-Greensboro, Alabama, TCU and Indiana. I whole-heartedly agree with Belmont's getting in (and glad to see it). No way does BIG12(7-11/-xWVA)[S9]Oklahoma get in for me (but there's the glare of "the win that ended Kansas' 14-year title streak" that surely was key). BIG10(8-12/+xIU)[M11]Ohio State has no business getting a bid for me (but maybe the preseason win over Cincinnati looks great now). Wouldn't have taken BIGE(9-9)[W11b]St. John's. At least SEC(9-9/+LSU)[W10]Florida and BIGE(9-9/+MARQ)[M10]Seton Hall both won their way in for me. [W11a]Arizona State and [E11b]Temple are acceptable "filler" teams now that there are more bids than quality teams these days. Would have loved to see a bid go to SOCON/UNCG and A-SUN/Lipscomb while COLON/Hofstra(-xNEN) and MAC/Toledo(-NoIll) both ruined their slim paths with upset tourney losses.      On the plus side of the cut line, I only had: Belmont(-Murray), N.C. State(-UVa) and Lipscomb(-Libty). On the minus side, I had: UNC-Greensboro(-Woff), Hofstra(-xNen), Toledo(-), Iowa(-Mich), Minnesota(+Purd), South Dakota State(-), Oklahoma(-xWVa), Syracuse(-Duke), Texas(-Kans), Mississippi(-xBama), Drake(-), Ohio State(-Mich), Temple(-), Baylor(-IowaSt), Florida(+LSU), Arizona State(-Ore), Seton Hall(+Marq) and St. John's(-Marq). (So officially, a dozen "undeserving" teams got in ... Ugh.)      Worst over-seeds for me are [E5]Mississippi State and [S8]Mississippi; [W8]Syracuse, [W9]Baylor, [W11a]Arizona State, [W11b]St. John's and [E13]St. Louis; as well as [W5]Marquette, [M10]Seton Hall and [W10]Florida. Worst under-seeds for me are [M12]New Mexico State (by far); [W12]Murray State, [W13]Vermont, [E14]Yale and [M15]Abilene Christian; [W6]Buffalo and [S13]UC-Irvine; as well as [S7]Cincinnati and [W7]Nevada.      [W1]Gonzaga placed in Salt Lake City,UT was a no-brainer. Someone had to be the odd-one-out among the three ACC juggernauts - - no problem with [M1]North Carolina getting third choice while [E1]Duke and [S1]UVa both got Columbia,SC (but I might have swapped [M1]UNC to Jackonville,FL and sent [M2]Kentucky to Columbus,OH, instead). Likewise, no problem where [E3]LSU(Jacksonville) and [E2]Tennessee(Columbus) were sent. At least, third-choice [S3]Purdue got to stay on the East Coast(Hartford,CT) after [E2]MichSt and [W2]Mich both got Des Moines,IA. Tough luck for third-choice [M4]Kansas(SaltLakeCity) to miss out on Tulsa,OK behind [M3]Houston and [W3]Texas Tech (but that's the right call). Fair enough that [W4]Florida State(Hartford) and [E4]Virginia Tech/[S4]Kansas State(San Jose,CA) all got catch-as-catch-can.      With at least a No.4 seed and multiple bids, the BIG 10, ACC, SEC and BIG 12 all qualify as B-Majors (as well as by rating). The multi-bid AMERICAN and WEST COAST both qualify as B-Majors by seed (if not by rating; but, frankly, WCC/[S11]St. Mary's doesn't get in without stealing a bid). The BIG EAST and MID-AMERICAN both qualified as B-Majors by rating (but neither had a No.4 seed [and the MAC only got one bid]). Multi-bid Mid-Majors were the PACIFIC-12 and OHIO VALLEY full on as well as the ATLANTIC 10 (by rating yes, but A10/[E13]St. Louis' bid was stolen) and the MOUNTAIN WEST (only Red Swirl by rating).      8 BIG 10 teams got placed 3 in the East and South - - ([S5]Wisconsin and [E6]Maryland could have been moved to the Midwest and West). With 7 bids, the ACC didn't deserve 3 all in the East when 7 SEC were split up no more than two per Region. 6 BIG 12 teams all got doubled-up with no one in the East at all - - ([M6]Iowa State deserved to be split from [M4]Kansas). Only 4 BIG EAST teams didn't deserve 2 in the West; likewise, 4 AMERICAN teams didn't deserve 2 in the East - - (just swap [E11a]Temple and [W11b]St. John's); both A-10 teams are in the East - - Ugh. The Splashworthy 1BCs who got in have some winnable match-ups, especially [W6]Buffalo all over either [W11a]Arizona State/[W11b]St. John's (and will give [W3]Texas Tech a run for the Sweet 16), [M7]Wofford over [M10]Seton Hall, [E11a]Belmont over [E11b]Temple (and will give [M6]Maryland a go), [W12]Murray State over [W5]Marquette (and will give [M4]Florida State a go), [M12]New Mexico State over [M5]Auburn. Toughest first-round games: [M4]Kansas State/[M13]UC-Irvine, [W4]Florida State/[W13]Vermont, [E3]LSU/[E14]Yale, and [M5]Auburn/[M12]New Mexico State. [W5]Marquette(pMarkus Howard)/[W12]Murray State(pJa Morant) is a dazzling match-up. [S7]@Cincinnati has a great shot to win in Columbus past [M2]Tennessee in Round Two. Nice touch giving [E16b]N.C. Central the chance to earn a game against crosstown-Durham,NC "Big Brother" [E1]Duke. Likewise, [E9]UCF(Johnny Dawkins) is a win away from facing his alma-mater [E1]Duke as well. Plus, [W11a]Arizona State(Bobby Hurley) can win his way to facing his previous school, [W6]Buffalo. It's kind of creepy putting [E10]Minnesota(Richard Pitino) up against [E7]Louisville (which fired his dad just last year). - - - - - - Because so many teams went TiTo and got into the NCAAs, the NIT field is mostly forgotten B-Major also-rans. Too bad [e5]Lipscomb and [e1]UNC-Greensboro were placed in the same Regional (along with [e7]Hofstra to boot). [s6]Toledo and [m3]Furman are the only other 1BCs worth keeping an eye on - - don't expect anything from last year's darlings, [w7]Loyola(Illinois). [e2]N.C. State is the best B-Major team in the draw. Look for [e2]NCSt past [m1]Indiana all the way over [w1]TCU past [s6]Toledo. (The experimental rules in effect are the same as last year: bonus after 5 fouls [resets after 10 minutes], wider lane [NBA size], deeper three-point arc [international distance].)      "Slumming" B-Majors [eA1]BIG12/West Virginia was a trackable team at some point in the season. [mA1]BIGE/DePaul and [sA1]AMER/South Florida all start out at home. [wA2]WCC/Loyola Marymount and [eA2]WAC/Grand Canyon both were trackable at some point as well. Hats off to [wA1]WAC/{California Baptist} for earning a postseason bid in its first season at Division-I. The WV-Mountaineers are the big favorites to go all the way past [mA1]BIGE/DePaul, [wA2]WCC/Loyola Marymount and [sA1]AMER/South Florida.      MVC co-title champ Drake got squeezed out of an NIT bid and fell all the way to the CIT. CUSA/Marshall was expected to be Splashworthy at the start of the season (but disappointed greatly). SWAC/Grambling State was trackable this season. SUNB/Texas State, HORIZ/IUPUI and SWAC/Texas Southern all drew attention at some point. MAC/Kent State, SOCON/East Tennessee State, WAC/Seattle and WAC/Texas-Rio Grande Valley all have the best pedigrees, otherwise. Only Drake has proven its ability to come through. - - - - - - The NCAA Seeding Committee did no favors to either [E1]Duke or [E2]Michigan State by placing them in the same Regional - - that matchup belongs in Minneapolis,MN, not Washington,DC. [M1]North Carolina-[M2]Kentucky-[M3]Houston as well as [W1]Gonzaga-[W2]Michigan-[W2]Texas Tech are both very tough threesomes topping those brackets. [S1]Virginia has so much to prove after last year's ignomy, but at least the draw is the "easiest" among the four top seeds.      [E6]Buffalo is the highest rated team in its half of the Tulsa,OK Pod, so not making the Sweet 16 will be an upset. Even with an extra Play-In game, [E11a]Belmont has a pretty winnable path the first weekend. [M12]New Mexico State's rating on paper makes it the favorite to win twice. [W12]Murray State is every bit as good as any one in its way as well. -- Ron P.S. If you're interested, the 36th Annual Hoops Contest is now open for entry (through 6:30PMet TUESDAY, 19 MARCH).
