Just because it seems inevitable doesn't make it any less special. Kansas won on the road at Baylor (66-@60) and beat Texas Tech (@67-58) to clinch a share of the BIG 12 title with a gap and still a week to go. Unbelievably, it's the TWELFTH-CONSECUTIVE REGULAR SEASON TITLE for the Jayhawks and coach Bill Self -- 12-FOR-12 IN THE BIG 12, baby -- DOZENS! (UCLA won thirteen-straight AAWU/PAC-8/PAC-10 titles [9 under John Wooden] from 1967-79, stopped by Oregon State[Ralph Miller/Steve Johnson]. Gonzaga and Mark Few won eleven-straight WEST COAST titles from 2001-11 before St. Mary's[Randy Bennett/bMatthew Delavedova] ended that streak.) Second-place West Virginia went 2-0 as well (including outrunning Iowa State [@97-87 behind gJaysean Paige[34p]), but the Mountaineers can only tie for the title if KU collapses this week. Rising Texas knocked off Oklahoma (@76-63 despite 33p6r from bBuddy Hield).
Just when you thought we might have a runaway dominant team this season, Xavier pulled Villanova back to within reach of a home-standing elite opponent: the Musketeers beat the Wildcats (@90-83 as six players posted double-figures). Even so, Villanova's 89-@79 win at Marquette clinched its third-straight BIG EAST title (with a gap and a week to go as well). Rising Seton Hall routed Providence (@70-52 as pIsaiah Whitehead[25p9a] dominated pKris Dunn[8p0a] and 31p6r from bBen Bentil wasn't nearly enough) and then knocked off Xavier (@90-81 as cDesi Rodriguez[27p12r] did the damage as much as 27-for-36 free-throw shooting). Creighton tripped at home to Marquette (@61-66).
Though not quite a showdown for first place in the ACC, Virginia edged North Carolina (@79-74) in what was likely the decider for ACC Player Of The Year (and first-team All-America) as bMalcolm Brogdon(26p6r) starred and fBrice Johnson(12p7r) stalled. Miami(Florida) tied UNC for the top spot with a strong week, edging UVa (@64-61) and beating Louisville (@73-65). Pittsburgh handled Duke (@76-62 controlling the boards 36-17). Louisville's road win at Pitt (67-@60) kept it in the hunt for the regular season title, tied for third with UVa. Notre Dame was routed at Florida State while Clemson tripped at Georgia Tech (73-@75 as fMarcus Georges-Hunt[25p5r4a] starred).
For the second time this season, Duke's gGrayson Allen DELIBERATELY TRIPPED AN OPPOSING PLAYER (this time, at the end of the game against Florida State). Beyond unacceptable. (As befits such a cowardly act, both instances have come in front of his adoring home crowd where officials are loathe to come down on him appropriately.) Yes, as the "Designated-(White)-Duke-Player-Opponents-'Love-To-Hate'", he gets more scrutiny than most; but there is absolute no excuse for this kind of repeatedly dirty behavior. Disappointingly, Mike Krzyzewski wouldn't flatly condemn him. So much for the myth of the classy program beyond reproach.

The Hawkeyes' loss(es) is Indiana's gain as the Hoosiers clinched the BIG 10 regular season title (with a gap and a week to go). Purdue edged Maryland (@83-79 dominating the boards 39-20). Wisconsin's 2-0 week finished with a win over Michigan (@68-57).

Surging California swept the Los Angeles teams, including a rout of USC (@87-65) to tie AZ for the second spot. Tulsa thumped Temple (@74-55), knocking the Owls back into a tie for first place in the AMERICAN (along with SMU); but the Hurricane couldn't keep it going, falling at Memphis. Houston kept Connecticut out of the running with a road win (75-@68).

Boise State edged MOUNTAIN WEST champ San Diego State on the road (66-@63) to keep its slim hopes for an at-large bid alive. Evansville's NCAA chances took a hit, tripping at home to Northern Iowa (@52-54).
Hawaii fell at home to UC-Riverside but still leads the BIG WEST with a week to go. Akron fell at Miami(Ohio) but held onto the MID-AMERICAN lead. Princeton edged third-place Columbia (@88-83 on 63 percent shooting) to stay tied with Yale for IVY first place. In the only BIG SKY showdown, Weber State beat Montana (@60-54 in a defensive struggle where both teams only had 9 assists combined) to take the outright lead with a week to go.

English[32p] starred) Monmouth closed 2-0 to clinch the METRO ATLANTIC title, anyway. Middle Tennessee fell at home to Western Kentucky while UAB's 2-0 week allowed it to clinch the CONFERENCE USA title (with a three-game gap with a week to go). Little Rock's 2-0 week let it clinch the SUN BELT title (with a three-game gap with a week to go).
New Mexico State clinched its second-straight WAC title (with a gap). Bucknell's 2-0 week gave it a second-straight PATRIOT title (and FIFTH OUT OF THE LAST SIX YEARS). High Point edged league-leader Winthrop (@87-85 despite 25p6r from 5-7 bKeon Johnson) to clinch a share of its second-straight BIG SOUTH title (and FOURTH OUT OF THE LAST FIVE YEARS) -- meanwhile, Coastal Carolina edged UNC-Asheville on the road (81-@79), keeping the Bulldogs from making it a triumvirate. Stephen F. Austin went 2-0 to cruise to the SOUTHLAND title (undefeated, with a three-game gap) -- it's the FOURTH-STRAIGHT TITLE for the Lumberjacks (and for tThomas Walkup). Wagner's 2-0 week clinched the NORTHEAST (with a gap). Texas Southern went 2-0 to clinch its second-straight SWAC title (with a three-game gap), its THIRD IN FOUR YEARS. Hampton's 2-0 week clinched the MEAC title (with a gap).

Gap-co-champs South Dakota State and IPFW as well as third-place Omaha all have a good shot to win the SUMMIT tourney (Saturday-Tuesday week). Akron won't have it easy winning the MAC tourney (Monday week-Saturday week). Expect a stirring rubber-game final between co-champs UNC-Wilmington and Hofstra in the likely COLON final (Monday week).
Belmont won't have it easy even at home to repeat as TiTo champs in the OVC tourney (Wednesday-Saturday). Home court may not be enough for Bucknell if it faces Lehigh in a rubber-game PAT final (Wednesday week). Home court should be just enough for Stony Brook to earn its first NCAA bid in the AMER-EAST tourney (Wednesday-Saturday week). Gap-champ North Florida should roll at home for a TiTo repeat in the A-SUN tourney (Tuesday-Sunday).
