20 Nov30 - "Scheduled To Appear"

Volume XXV, No. 2 - 20 Nov30 - [] Top 25 Ballot "Scheduled To Appear"

We may as well get used to schools pausing their activities, postponing/cancelling games, and opponents being swapped in to replace them. It happened right away in Week One and likely will continue throughout the entire season. The GULF COAST SHOWCASE (already moved from Estero,FL to Ft. Myers,FL to form the "BEACH BUBBLE" along with the FT. MYERS TIP-OFF) had several teams cancel over COVID-19 issues and switched on the fly from an 8-team bracket to a 5-team round-robin event.

Villanova looked fine (if not dominant) in winning the 2K EMPIRE CLASSIC inside "BUBBLEVILLE" at the MOHEGAN SUN in Uncasville,CT (including beating Arizona State in the final [83-74 as fJeremiah Robinson-Earl{28p8r} starred]). The V-Wildcats' next opponent was supposed to be Philadelphia/City Series-rival Temple; but the T-Owls had to pause. (The BIG 5 is already down to four with IVY/Penn opting out of the season entirely; schools will be lucky to get in two games each against the "City 6" [including Drexel] and now this.) So 'Nova hastily arranged a matchup with Virginia Tech (which also lost a game with Temp). The Hokies took advantage of the opportunity, pulling off the upset in overtime (81-73[OT] despite 25p4a from gCollin Gillespie).
Meanwhile, Gonzaga was scary-good in running past Kansas in the feature matchup of the FT. MYERS TIP-OFF (102-90 shooting 65 percent as fDrew Timme[25p6r] starred). The G-Bulldogs already featured perhaps the best frontcourt duo in the land (fTimme and fCorey Kispert) and now have added GC gJalen Suggs (dare I say, a LeBron-esque power/point player) out top (not to mention Florida hardship-transfer pAndrew Nembhard). The ease with which they handled the Jayhawks and their demonstrated depth puts them on a path already to be one of the great teams (with real potential for an undefeated season with so little opposition within the WEST COAST).
Virginia tripped against WCC/San Francisco (60-61) in what was called the HOMELIGHT CLASSIC inside "BUBBLEVILLE"-CT. Veteran Richmond took advantage of a "no-crowd" Rupp Arena to upset young Kentucky (76-@64 as the K-Wildcats were 0-for-10 on three-pointers) to claim the Unwelcome Guest crown at the K-W/BLUEGRASS SHOWCASE. Fellow ATLANTIC 10 conferencemate St. Louis edged LSU at home (@85-81 as pJavonte Perkins[32p5a] starred) to win their own SL/BILLIKEN CLASSIC. Houston handled Texas Tech (@64-@53) in the feature matchup of the SOUTHWEST SHOWCASE in Ft. Worth,TX.      The best field of the first weekend belonged to the CROSSOVER CLASSIC at the SANFORD PENTAGON in Sioux Falls,SD. Most disappointing was young Memphis, which dropped two: losing to Western Kentucky (69-75 despite 25p4a from pLanders Nolley II) and also VCU (59-70). "Not ready for Prime Time" were both Mid-Major Northern Iowa (0-3; losing to WeKy, tanking against St. Mary's, losing to Utah State) and 1BC South Dakota State (1-2; losing to WVa and StMary, routing UtahSt). In the final, favorite West Virginia held off impressive Western Kentucky (70-64).

In B-Major events, Clemson won the new SPACE COAST CHALLENGE in Melbourne,FL (past Mississippi State and Purdue). ASUN/Liberty routed South Carolina (78-62) to make the final of the CBE CLASSIC at T-MOBILE ARENA in Kansas City,MO; but it was TCU that took the crown (56-52). OVC/Belmont won the PARADISE JAM (relocated to Washington,DC; past the likes of A10/George Mason). SLAND/Abilene Christian claimed first place in the GULF COAST CLASSIC (relocated to the Ft. Myers.FL "BEACH BUBBLE"; past the likes of CUSA/Middle Tennessee).
With no real home crowds to speak of, being an Unwelcome Guest winner of a hosted tournament doesn't carry the same weight this year. Still, both Colorado and MVC/Drake beat host Kansas State to share first place in the KS-W/LITTLE APPLE CLASSIC. MWC/Nevada edged host Nebraska to win the N-C/GOLDEN WINDOW CLASSIC. WAC/Seattle beat host Portland in the P/PILOT INVITATIONAL. Both SOCON/Western Carolina and COLON/UNC-Wilmington beat host BIGS/UNC-Asheville to share first place in the NCA/BULLDOG CLASSIC. CUSA/Rice routed host SLAND/Incarnate Word to win the IW/CARDINAL CLASSIC.

Elsewhere, San Diego State dumped UCLA (@73-58) in their game for West Coast bragging rights (um, well behind Gonzaga, that is).
In a spectacular edition of their crosstown grudge match, Georgia State outdueled host Georgia Tech (123-@120[3OT] as tJustin Roberts[26p6a9r] dueled 31p20r from cMoses Wright and 29p10r from xJose Alvarado).

fLuka Garza may have salted away Player Of The Year in Week One: he dropped 41p9r (on 14-for-15 shooting) in Iowa's @103-76 romp over Southern. (Who else is going to put numbers like that?)

- - - - - -

The CHAMPIONS CLASSIC (originally slated for the UNITED CENTER in Chicago) has been split across two locations this year (Kansas and Kentucky will play in Indianapolis,IN while Duke will host Michigan State in Durham,NC).

After already handling Kansas, Gonzaga can fairly claim it's the rightful BIG 12 champ if it sweeps West Virginia (Wednesday at the JIMMY V CLASSIC) and Baylor (Saturday) both in the Indy "BUBBLE". Cameron without "The Crazies" won't intimidate Michigan State against host Duke and the same goes for Kansas against young Kentucky without the "Big Blue Nation" in the split-venue CHAMPIONS CLASSIC (Tuesday).
Louisville will have its hands full more than usual this year against "Little Brother" Western Kentucky (Tuesday).
Reloaded North Carolina can put last year's nightmare behind it with a win at the MAUI INVITATIONAL (Monday thru Wednesday; relocated to Asheville,NC), which is theirs for the taking. New-look USC won't have it easy against veteran Connecticut should those two meet in the final of LEGENDS (Thursday; relocated to the CT "BUBBLE").

20 Nov23 - We, The Living (PRESEASON)

Volume XXV, No. 1 - 20 Nov23: PRESEASON - [] Top 25 Ballot

We, The Living

When the shutdown happened last March, it felt like Bad Luck/Bad Timing because it occurred just on the eve of the NCAA tournament. "A couple weeks of incovenience -- a month at most" is what we naively thought at the time. Eight months later, things are worse than ever. This really is as bad as the 1918-20 "Spanish" Flu, after all. We're still waiting on truly effective treatments (let alone a cure), and vaccines (although promising) are still months away from being available in a widespread manner across the entire globe. To be honest, the situation is worse now than when things were totally shut down. "COVID Fatigue" has much of the country unwilling to do even the minimum of sacrifices in order to get to the other side of this. ("The Good People" have made the calculation that "This isn't really about 'Me and Mine', so why should we inconvenience ourselves when we aren't the ones who'll suffer the consequences?". That unfortunate reality means it will be much longer than it had to be (and much worse for the most vulnerable than they have any capacity to prevent).
By comparison, College Basketball is insignifcant. Even so, We, The Living (as Ayn Rand put it) must find a way to carry on with some kind of "normal"cy while we protect the health and safety of the student-athletes, staff and fans.

A by-product of the Pandemic has been that, with people at home during the shutdown, they have been more exposed to news of the reality of racial injustice in this country (especially, killing unarmed Black Men by Police, but also the racial inequities of health care, etc.). While that heightened awareness had made open-minded people more receptive to appreciating this unfairness; for others, shining a light on it has only hardened their resistance to acknowledge any such issue as a problem.
Within College Basketball, complaints by players of racial abuse by coaches has received more receptive attention. Investigations have led to the firing/resignation of some high-profile coaches (Gregg Marshall[Wichita State], Pat Chambers[Penn State]) after details of the allegations of their racially abusive behavior (both verbal and physical) became public.
It may be a blip, or it may be the beginning of a movement. Inspired by a sense of Black Empowerment and in an attempt to combat Black Exploitation, highly regarded recruit cMakur Maker wanted to start a trend: Rather than commit to a B-Major school (as his talent rating suggests), he chose to sign with a 1BC (One-Bid Conference) HBCU (Historically Black College/University), Howard. There's a long-time on-going argument whether it's better for the Black Community as a whole for "The Talented Tenth" (i.e., the top 10 percent of the population) to fully assimilate at a Majority-White instituion (and thereby take advantage of all the superior opportunities that entails) or whether that constitutes "abandoning your People" and that it's better to "stay home with your own" and let the glory of your talents be enjoyed by "Our institutions". (Regardless of where you stand in that argument, one player won't make much of a difference. It's not impossible: We've seen Larry Bird start as a B-Major signee for Bob Knight at Indiana and switch to leading a one-man Indiana State team all the way to the NCAA final. More recently it hasn't worked as well: Golden Child Charles Bassey snubbed the B-Majors, but hasn't yet been able to lead Mid-Major Western Kentucky to the NCAA tourney. In Maker's case, it'll be hard to get noticed nationally from MEAC/Howard and perhaps impossible to be seeded beyond 14th come March. But a movement has to start somewhere, no matter how small the first step.)

Several changes are in the offing in light of the "New Normal"" (for this season, at least).
Graduate Transfer (which allows immediate eligibility without having to sit out a year in between changing schools) was already an increasingly popular route. (And, Hooray! Anything that doesn't treat players like the "property" of their school/coach in the "Plantation" Mentality is a way good thing, in my book.) But with the Pandemic, hardship-transfers (also with immediate eligibility) have exploded for this season. GTs have mostly been about players who've "conquered" the 1BC experience making the jump to Mid-Major or even B-Major. Instead, this year's hardship-transfers have been more about geography (playing closer to home and family) and have even been within the same conference, heretofore unheard of.
Some changes are bigger than others. Most notably, The IVY LEAGUE decided to cancel the 2020-21 season entirely. MEAC/Bethune-Cookman cancelled all sports for 2020-21. Both New Mexico schools will play their "home" games in Texas. And the entire NCAA tournament will now be held in one "Bubble" location (in Indianapolis,IN).
How much of a live crowd any conferences/schools will allow is a mixed bag (but no one will be near regular capacity). Several conferences have made adjustments to their schedules to reduce travel: More than a third of all conferences have gone to two-game series against each opponent (many on consecutive days). (Keep an eye on that because there's a real danger of flare-ups carrying over when you're playing the same opponent back-to-back, especially in front of the same "crowd".) The SUN BELT (East/West) and MEAC (Northern/Southern) both have re-aligned into two Divisions; and further teams will only play games within their Division (up to four times in some cases). CONFERENCE USA has gone back to a fully predetermined 18-game schedule (13 + 5) (scrapping [at least for this year] their "Group-Seed" reset for the final four games on the season). The PACIFIC-12 won't even finalize the exact dates for regular season match-ups until later; for now, all they have declared is which school pairings will meet home/away each week. The BIG EAST is only announcing its schedule piecemeal (only naming December match-ups for now).
Travel is a big concern. Many long-time preseason events have been cancelled all together for this year (including the CHARLESTON CLASSIC, DIAMOND HEAD CLASSIC, MYRTLE BEACH INVITATIONAL, NIT SEASON TIP-OFF, ORLANDO CLASSIC and WOODEN LEGACY). Other off-shore events have been moved to the mainland (including PARADISE JAM [moved from St. Thomas,USVI to Washington,DC] and MAUI INVITAITONAL [moved from Lahaina,HI to Asheville,NC]). Many of the CONFERENCE CHALLENGES have been cancelled for this year (most notably, GAVITT GAMES [BIG 10/BIG EAST]).
A few "Bubble" locations have been established in the preseason in order to provide a safe environment for as many schools as possible to have multiple games. The MOHEGAN SUN Casino in Uncasville,CT will be one "Bubbleville" site from Nov25-Dec 5 (hosting events such as the HALL OF FAME TIP-OFF, 2K EMPIRE CLASSIC and LEGENDS CLASSIC on top of hosting regular match-ups between teams unrelated to any specific tournament). The SANFORD PENTAGON in Sioux Falls,SD will host several events. Louisville will host some separate "Bubbleville" events in addition to the new WADE HOUSTON CLASSIC.

Last year, regular season dominance continued/was restored in many conferences. Gonzaga/Mark Few won the WEST COAST (their NINETEENTH REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN TWENTY YEARS); after falling off the horse, Kansas/Bill Self re-earned the BIG 12 title (their FIFTEENTH IN SIXTEEN YEARS); Villanova/Jay Wright's BIG EAST tri-title was their SIXTH IN SEVEN YEARS; both South Dakota State's SUMMIT co-title as well as New Mexico State's WAC title were their FIFTH IN SIX YEARS; Vermont/John Becker in AMERICA EAST (FOUR-STRAIGHT TITLES), UC-Irvine/Russell Turner in the BIG WEST (FOUR TITLES IN FIVE YEARS) and Murray State's co-title in the OHIO VALLEY (their FOURTH IN FIVE YEARS) all extended streaks that lasted beyond any one cohort of players.
Alas, the Hoops, Interrupted finish to the season left some once-in-a-generation teams wondering, "What might have been?" about the postseason. San Diego State(30-2) and Dayton(29-2) both seemed headed for No.1-seeds; Liberty(30-4) seemed headed for a second-straight 32-Splash win; both Stephen F. Austin(28-3) and East Tennessee State(30-4) seemed Splashworthy as well - - all of those teams were on pace for the greatest seasons in program history; all cut short.

Penalties from the 2017 Shoe Scandal are starting to hit schools this season. (Up until now, it has only been the individual coaches/agents involved who have been penalized. In fact, erstwhile Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino has already "served his time" for his actions at Louisville and has returned to College Basketball at Iona [replacing retired Tim Cluess].) Oklahoma State will be ineligible for the postseason (but Golden Child tCade Cunningham honored his commitment and will play for the OS-Cowboys, anyway). Auburn self-imposed a postseason ban for this year (in anticipation of severe NCAA punishment to come). (This issue will all be moot come 2021 as the NCAA will likely have in place by then rules to allow players to profit individually from their NIL [Name, Image and Likeness] and still remain eligible as "amateurs".)      A bit more activity in the off-season with schools changing conferences. Most notably, Connecticut has ended its seven-year foray in the AMERICAN (since their split with The Catholic 7) and returned to its ancestral home of the BIG EAST (with a fortified team and five returning starters, no less). Other significant moves include Purdue-Ft. Wayne's leaving the SUMMIT to rejoin its fraternal twin IUPUI in the HORIZON, New Jersey Tech's geographic move from the ATLANTIC SUN to AMERICA EAST, and Robert Morris's upwardly mobile jump from the NORTHEAST to the HORIZON. Four new teams are making the jump up from Division-II (and won't be fully eligible for the postseason until 2024-25): the ATLANTIC SUN/{Bellarmine} Knights and the BIG WEST/{UC-San Diego} Tritons as well as the {Dixie State} Trailblazers and the {Tarleton State} Texans, both of the WAC.
Precious few coaching changes this off-season. Besides Rick Pitino for Tim Cluess at Iona (see above); Danny Manning was fired at Wake Forest (and Steve Forbes parlayed his success at East Tennessee State to replace him). Elsewhere, former name coaches returned to the scene: Andy Kennedy (UAB) and Billy Gillespie ({Tarleton State}) both are back.
Only a handful of last year's elite teams return essentially intact. Baylor and Wisconsin (with four starters back) both expect more of the same while Villanova(pCollin Gillespie) and Virginia added much to solid returning nuclei; plus the likes of Illinois, UCLA and Iowa(cLuka Garza) all expect bigger results from five returning starters. Gonzaga as well as Duke and Kentucky all reloaded as usual while reloaded Tennessee and North Carolina(cGarrison Brooks) both expect much more after massively disappointing seasons. Kansas and Michigan State still have talent (but aren't the locks to dominate their leagues that we're used to).
As usual, North Carolina(4) and Duke(3) pushed the ACC out front with the most incoming new talent (with 8 Golden Children overall). The SEC (4, led by Kentucky[2]) and PACIFIC-12 (4, led by Arizona State[2]) trailed significantly while the BIG EAST (1) and AMERICAN (1) barely posted notable newcomers with the BIG 10 garnering no GC players at all.
Look for the ATLANTIC 10 to have another solid year (with St. Louis and Richmond as well as Duquesne and St. Bonaventure all returning five starters). The MISSOURI VALLEY should be strong at the top (with Northern Iowa and Loyola[Illinois]{five starters} both expecting big years). SUMMIT/South Dakota State and SUN BELT/Little Rock both have five starters back for teams that expect Splashworthy postseasons. In the 1BC Red Swirl, BIG SKY/Eastern Washington, METRO ATLANTIC/Siena and HORIZON/Wright State all are returning title-champs but can't expect a postseason Splash.
Stat-stuffer cLuka Garza(Iowa) is the preseason favorite for Player Of The Year (but I'd bet he'd prefer an elite season for his Hawkeye team as a whole - - runner-up pCollin Gillespie[Villanova] might get both). Graduate Transfer Of the Year could be downsizer cMatt Haarms(BYU; ex-Purdue) ahead of upsizer pCarlik Jones(Louisville; ex-BIG SOUTH/Radford). (Regular) Transfer Of The Year looks to be fSam Hauser(Virginia; ex-Marquette) ahead of uplifted gDavid Jenkins(UNLV; ex-SUMMIT/South Dakota State). Golden Child Of The Year looks more like postseason-bound fJalen Johnson(Duke) rather than regular-season-only tCade Cunningham(Oklahoma State).

- - - - - -

Even this week's schedule is only tentative with several schools having to pause activities, postpone and even outright cancel games due to positive COVID-19 test either in their own ranks or their opponents (and even general "Bubbleville" co-habitors).
The 2K EMPIRE CLASSIC usually crowns its champ at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in New York,NY; but that got switched to the MOHEGAN SUN in Uncasville,CT (and orginal participant Baylor was replaced by West Virginia). What started out as the BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS at Paradise Island,BAHAMAS got moved to the SANFORD PENTAGON in Sioux Falls,SD and renamed the new CROSSOVER CLASSIC; but by the time teams pulled out only two of the original eight teams were still in the field (and replacement VCU only got in with two days notice). A bunch of teams will play a bunch of games at Louisville - - some of them count towards the new WADE HOUSTON CLASSIC while some are just generic "BUBBLEVILLE" matchups - - it's a confusing mess.
As far as intriguing matchups, the best we can say is "Scheduled To Appear" as teams may postpone/cancel/swap opponents at the last minute.
The feature matchup of the FT. MYERS TIP-OFF (Thursday) should be the best of the weekend with Gonzaga (GC gJalen Suggs) meeting Kansas (GC gBryce Thompson). Villanova should have no problem winning 2K EMPIRE (Wednesday thru Thursday) past Arizona State (now that Baylor has dropped out). The renamed CROSSOVER CLASSIC (Wednesday thru Friday) has the strongest field - - look for a West Virginia-Memphis toss-up final (unless Northern Iowa or South Dakota State can spoil the party). Houston hosts Texas Tech (Sunday) in the feature match of the SOUTHWEST SHOWCASE.
St. Louis (LSU), Louisville (Little Rock) and Kentucky (Richmond) all gave themselves real opponents that push their home round-round tournaments beyond easy-cruise showcases. San Diego State hosts UCLA (Wednesday) in a game that has heat beyond West Coast bragging rights.
The new SPACE COAST CHALLENGE at Melbourne,FL (Wednesday thru Thursday) is a B-Major prize that's up for grabs. The wide-open GULF COAST SHOWCASE (Wednesday thru Friday) could be the top Mid-Major prize.

This year, we're on the road to Indianapolis!

Welcome back, y'all!

Solid Ten

The BIG 10 beat the ACC 8-6 in this year's head-to-head CHALLENGE (with a good Virginia Tech team sitting out). Three road wins for Ohio State dumping North Carolina (74-@49 only allowing one double-figure scorer), Northwestern thumping pumpkin Boston College (82-@64) and Iowa handling Syracuse (68-@54) were only countered twice by Duke's handling Michigan State (87-@75 as GC cVernon Carey Jr[26p11r] and pTre Jones[20p12a] both starred) and Miami(Florida) edging Illinois (81-@79). (All of the BIG 10's wins were solid; but it was nearly 9-5 if not for MiaFL>@Ill.) The best win of all belonged to the ACC as Louisville dumped Michigan (@58-43) while Purdue avenged last year's NCAA loss, dumping Virginia (@69-40) and Indiana thumped Florida State (@80-64 on bDevonte Green[30p6r]'s star turn). N.C. State handled slumping Wisconsin (@68-54).

The BIG EAST went up 4-1 in its new head-to-head CHALLENGE with the BIG 12 thanks to road wins by Marquette at Kansas State (73-@65) and Georgetown at Oklahoma State (81-@74 as Mac McClung[33p] dueled 29p6a6r from pLindy Waters III). DePaul edged Texas Tech in overtime (@65-60[OT]).
Houston's road-rout at South Carolina put the AMERICAN up 1-0 over the SEC in their new fledgling head-to-head CHALLENGE.
Three more home wins put the BIG SKY up 3-1 head-to-head against the SUMMIT.

At the HALL OF FAME/JERRY COLANGELO CLASSIC triple-header at TALKING STICK in Phoenix,AZ, Dayton knocked off St. Mary's (78-68), Liberty beat host Grand Canyon (70-@61) and St. Louis thumped Tulane (86-62 shooting 17-for-28 on three-pointers led by xHasahn French[18p11r5a]).
Xavier won this year's CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT over Cincinnati (@73-66 as tNaji Marshall[31p8r] starred).
Texas beat Texas A&M (@60-@50 only allowing one double-figure scorer) at LONE STAR SHOWDOWN in FtWorth,TX.
Belmont edged Lipscomb (@80-75) to complete the sweep in this year's BATTLE OF THE BOULEVARD series.

St. Bonaventure gave the ATLANTIC 10 its fifth tournament win, claiming the BOCA RATON BEACH CLASSIC, taking out Florida Atlantic (71-@64) in the final (and dumping Hofstra [@73-45] in the cool-down).

In State Title grudge matches, Gonzaga beat host Washington (83-@76), host Rhode Island handled slumping Providence (@75-61 on pFatts Russell[28p8a5r]'s star turn) and Creighton thumped Nebraska (@95-76 on tMarcus Zegarowski[30p6a9r]'s star turn).
New Mexico State earned a split with UTEP (@59-56) in their Border War series.

Elsewhere, the BIG 12 won two big games against PAC-12 opponents as Baylor edged Arizona (@63-58 only allowing 27 percent shooting) and Kansas handled Colorado (@72-58 only allowing one double-figure scorer). As expected, giant-killer Stephen F. Austin turned back into a pumpkin, falling at 4-4 Alabama (68-@78).
Temple fell at home to Missouri (@54-64) while Florida fell at Butler (62-@76). SUMMIT/North Dakota State scored a big (home) win over SOCON/East Tennessee State (@78-68 despite 23p9r2a from tBo Hodges); disappointing BIG.W/UC-Irvine fell at home to still reclassifying WAC/{California Baptist} (@60-68 as fMilan Acquaah[26p7r] starred) and HORIZ/Wright State edged C-USA/Western Kentucky (@76-74 on Cole Gentry's game-winner).
Cincinnati beat Vermont (@82-73 despite 16p11r7a from xAnthony Lamb).

- - - - - -

In early conference play, Virginia kept North Carolina in a funk, winning (@56-47). Michigan bounced back to outrun Iowa (@103-91 as six double-figure scorers countered 44p8r from fLuka Garza) while Duke handled nemesis Virginia Tech on the road (77-@63).

- - - - - -

The PAC-12 has two more Top-25 showdowns this week (this time at home) as Oregon hosts Michigan and Arizona hosts Gonzaga (both Saturday). Tennessee's State Title grudge match with visiting Memphis has a Top-25 sheen this year.
Look for Louisville (over Texas Tech) and Indiana (over Connecticut) to win in the JIMMY V CLASSIC at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in New York,NY. UC-Irvine should come out on top at the DON HASKIN/SUN BOWL INVITATIONAL past Kent State and host UTEP (Monday week-Tuesday week).
Iowa has a shot on the road at Iowa State in this year's CY-HAWK SERIES matchup (Thursday). Baylor should win at home against a good Butler team (Tuesday) inside BIG 12/BIG EAST. Colorado has a shot on the road at Colorado State in their State Title showdown (Friday).
Look for New Mexico State to pull off the road win at Denver (Tuesday) to tie up SUMMIT/WAC.

19 Dec 2 - "I'm A Lumberjack, And I'm OK!"

Volume XXIV, No. 5 - 19 Dec 2 - [] Top 25 Ballot

"I'm A Lumberjack, And I'm OK!"

Yes, young teams can be inconsistent; but ... Come on! Duke has already proven itself beating Kansas on a neutral court in the CHAMPIONS CLASSIC; yet somehow it managed to lose at home to unheralded Stephen F. Austin, @83-85(OT) (snapping a 150-game home win streak against nonconference opponents). The SFA-Lumberjacks didn't do anything special to earn the (squeak) road win; neither did the D-Blue Devils do anything special to lose. DU just didn't post, which is more disappointing in the Big Picture ... Ugh. - - (Wait, didn't we just do this!?) Evansville turned back into a pumpkin right away after its stunning road win at Kentucky; at least SFAus looks to be more legitimate for the long haul.
St. Mary's came up with a huge win, taking down Utah State (@81-73 as bJordan Ford[27p5r] starred).

Rising Richmond dumped tumbling Boston College (@64-44 as tJacob Gilyard[22p6a8r] starred).

"Big Brother" Louisville dumped "Little Brother" Western Kentucky (@71-@54 as bJordan Nwora[25p5r] starred) in their annual clash (at a neutral-site in Nashville,TN).

- - - - - -

Mostly, it was a big week for preseason tournaments - - lots of tight results that don't really mean much, but some decisive scores caused a major reshuffling of the national rankings.
At the EMERALD COAST CLASSIC in Niceville,FL, Florida State edged Tennessee (@60-57) in the semifinals and then beat Purdue in overtime (@63-60[OT]) in the final, both on the strength of its defensive prowess; Purd had edged VCU (59-56) in the semis while Tenn edged VCU (72-69) for third place.
At the BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS in Paradise Island,BAHAMAS, Michigan took out North Carolina (73-64) and thumped Gonzaga (82-64); Gonz edged Oregon in overtime (73-72[OT] on cFilip Petrusev[21p15r]'s star turn) while UNC edged Ore (78-74 sinking 20-for-21 free throws).
In the LEGENDS CLASSIC at the BARCLAYS CENTER in Brooklyn,NY, Auburn dumped New Mexico (84-59) and beat Richmond (79-65); both Rich (62-52) and NM (59-50) beat Wisconsin.
At the MAUI INVITATIONAL in Lahaina,HI, Kansas came through as expected, edging surprising Dayton in the final (90-84[OT] on bDevon Dotson[31p6r]'s star turn); Dayton thumped both Georgia (80-61) and Virginia Tech (89-62); VaTech surprised Michigan State (71-66); MichSt outran UGa (93-85 as pCassius Winston[28p8a] dueled 37p6r from GC bAnthony Edwards).
In the LAS VEGAS-THANKSGIVING INVITATIONAL at ORLEANS ARENA in Las Vegas,NV, San Diego State dumped Creighton (83-52) and beat Iowa (83-73 as bMalachi Flynn[28p5r]'s starred); both Iowa (72-61) and Creighton (83-76 on pMarcus Zegarwoski[32p5a]'s star turn) beat Texas Tech.
At the ORLANDO INVITATIONAL, Maryland came through as expected, beating Temple (76-69) and Harvard (80-73 despite 30p0a from gBryce Aiken) as well as thumping Marquette (84-63 despite 27p6r from bBrendan Bailey) as Anthony Cowan averaged 24p3a in three games; gMarkus Howard put up 51p in Marq's 101-79 romp over USC in the semis, but managed only 6p;1/12fg against the Wolverines in the final; USC thumped Harv for third (77-62 as GC cOnyeka Okongwu[27p14r] dominated); Davidson dropped two, falling to Marq [63-73 as gMarkus Howard{40p2a} dueled 28p10r from xKellan Grady] and also Temple [53-66].)

Arizona won the WOODEN LEGACY/ANAHEIM CLASSIC, taking out Wake Forest (73-66) in the final; disappointing Providence went 1-2, tripping against BIGW/Long Beach State (65-@66) and losing to COLON/College of Charleston (55-63 as bGrant Riller[29p5r] starred).
Nevada won the PARADISE JAM in St. Thomas,USVI, dumping MAC/Bowling Green in the final (77-62 on bJazz Johnson[25p5r]'s star turn).
A10/St. Louis completed its 4-0 run through the GOTHAM CLASSIC field with a 64-@54 win at BosCol. (Meanwhile, Belmont fell again, tripping at SKY/Eastern Washington [82-@87 despite 30p7r from fNick Muszynski]).
A10/George Mason emerged as champion of the CAYMAN ISLANDS CLASSIC in George Town,CI, edging New Mexico State in the final (68-64); disappointing South Florida lost to both NmSt (45-65) and Nebraska (67-74). (Host SUMMIT/Omaha won the Consolation bracket.)
Colorado edged Clemson (71-67) in the final of the LAS VEGAS-MAIN EVENT at T-MOBILE ARENA. (Disappointing UC-Irvine went 1-3 to share the Consolation crown at Clark High School along with SUNB/Louisiana and HORIZ/Detroit.)

Butler beat Missouri (63-52) and edged Stanford (68-67 on bKamar Baldwin's game-winner) to win the CBE CLASSIC at the SPRINT CENTER in Kansas City,MO.
Pittsburgh edged Kansas State (63-59) and beat Northwestern (72-59) to win the FT. MYERS TIP-OFF. (MAAC/Monmouth won the Consolation frame at home, including thumping Radford [@80-63].)
Oklahoma State beat Syracuse (86-72 on pIsaac Likekele[26p8a5r]'s star turn) and dumped Mississippi (78-37 allowing no double-figure scorers) to win the NIT SEASON TIP-OFF at the BARCLAY CENTER in Brooklyn,NY. (IVY/Yale won the Consolation bracket in Orlando,FL, including dumping MAC/Western Michigan [73-51].)
Memphis went 4-0 to win the BROOKLYN-THANKSGIVING CLASSIC, including edging N.C. State (83-78 despite 24p6a5r from pMarkell Johnson) in the feature match at the BARCLAYS CENTER.
West Virginia edged MVC/Northern Iowa (60-55) and handled Wichita State (75-63) to win the CANCUN CHALLENGE in CANCUN,MEXICO.
A10/La Salle edged both Wright State (72-70) and SUNB/South Alabama (81-76[OT]) to win the GULF COAST SHOWCASE in Estero,FL.
Ohio State won its home showcase OS-BUCKEYE CLASSIC, including dumping "Little Brother" MAC/Kent State (71-52).
Texas State and SMU both went 4-0 to share the new SOUTHWESTERN SHOWDOWN as both beat UNLV on the road.

Oregon State won the LAS VEGAS-CHRISTMAS/NOVEMBER CLASSIC, including dumping WCC/San Jose State (83-48) in the feature match at ORLEANS ARENA. Illinois won its home showcase I-ILLINI OAHU CLASSIC.
Indiana won its home showcase I-HOOSIER CLASSIC. WCC/Santa Clara won its own CABLE CAR CLASSIC.
Kentucky won its home showcase K-WILDCAT BBN SHOWCASE. Arkansas won the A-group of the new COLLEGIATE HOOPS ROADSHOW, all at home.
WCC/Pacific and MAC/Northern Illinois both went 3-0 to share the crown of the B-group of the new COLLEGIATE HOOPS ROADSHOW, all at home as well.

- - - - - -

Unwelcome Guests stole their crowns away from host schools expecting a home showcase win.
Tulsa went 4-0 to win the V-COMMODORE INVITATIONAL, including beating Vanderbilt (67-@58 despite 26p6r from bAaron Nesmith).
DePaul won the M-GOLDEN GOPHER INVITATIONAL, including beating MAC/Central Michigan (88-75) and edging Minnesota (73-@68).
SUMMIT/North Dakota, SUNB/Georgia Southern and BIGS/Campbell all beat host ASUN/Florida Gulf Coast in the FGC-EAGLE CLASSIC but each split 1-1 among themselves to share the crown. SOCON/Furman won ATLANTIS Consolation, including road-routing host COLON/Elon (97-@61). Colgate won LEGENDS Consolation, including thumping host HORIZ/Bay (99-@81 as Jordan Burns[40p] starred).

- - - - - -

North Dakota State dumped host Idaho (70-@53) to put the SUMMIT LEAGUE up 1-0 in its head-to-head CHALLENGE with the BIG SKY.

- - - - - -

Having already taken out San Diego in the semifinals (70-61), A10/St. Bonaventure shouldn't have any trouble with CUSA/Florida Atlantic in the final of the BOCA RATON BEACH CLASSIC (Monday).

In their new head-to-head CHALLENGE, look for the BIG 12 to lead 3-2 after this week over the BIG EAST on its way to an overall 6-4 win (Wednesday through Sun 22 Dec). Road wins from Texas Tech (at DePaul) and Marquette (at Kansas State) should cancel each other out this week, but later Kansas (at Villanova) and Texas (at Providence) should overcome Xavier (at TCU).
Look for the BIG 10 to beat the ACC 8-6 in their head-to-head CHALLENGE (Monday through Wednesday) with Michigan (over Louisville), Ohio State (over North Carolina), Iowa (over Syracuse) and Wisconsin (over N.C. State) claiming road wins to counter Virginia (over Purdue), Florida State (over Indiana) and Duke (over Michigan State).
The new SEC/AMERICAN ALLIANCE gets started with a modest four-game slate (Sunday; Sat 1 Jan). Look for Houston to win on the road at South Carolina (Sunday); and it might wind up 4-0 come January if SMU can win at Vanderbilt.
With the SUMMIT already leading 1-0 head-to-head against the BIG SKY, look for things to be tied by week's end with only South Dakota State (over Montana State) able to win on the road. Overall, look for the SUMMIT to win 5-3 (despite only getting three home games).

The BIG 12 hosts the PAC-12 in two high-profile matchups as Baylor meets Arizona and Kansas meets Colorado (both Saturday). St. Mary's puts its ranking to the test with a neutral-site clash against Dayton as part of the JERRY COLANGELO CLASSIC at TALKING STICK in Phoenix,AZ (Sunday). In one of the strongest editions of their annual State Title grudge match, Washington hosts Gonzaga (Sunday).
This year's CROSSTOWN SHOOTOUT is just below the radar has Xavier hosts Cincinnati (Saturday).
Look for Belmont to complete the sweep at home against arch-/city-rival Lipscomb in the second leg of the BATTLE OF THE BOULEVARD (Tuesday).

- - - - - -

In early conference play, Michigan hosts upstart Iowa (Friday). Virginia hosts North Carolina (Sunday).
     Virginia Tech hosts Duke (Friday).

P.S. Look for the Official Invitation for the 13TH ANNUAL Pigskin Pool Party (Ron's College Football Bowl Season Pool) shortly.
