Self-Actualization
In the final game of the regular season, WEST COAST title champ Gonzaga lost its bid to go undefeated. The Bulldogs fell at home to BYU (@71-79), collapsing down the stretch as the Cougars' cEric Mika(29p11r) starred while the 'Zags shot only 3-for-16 on three-pointers and just 16-for-29 on free throws as they got tight in the closing moments. (Maybe now, with the pressure to go unbeaten lifted, GU can finally make its first Final Four. Even with this road upset, though, BYU still isn't likely to get an At-Large bid into the NCAAs.)
With the BIG EAST regular season already locked up, Villanova didn't have full incentive against Butler; but give the Bulldogs credit for completing the season sweep of the Wildcats with a 74-@66 road win. Creighton continued to stumble towards the end with two more losses: tripping at home against Providence (@66-68) and tanking on the road at Villanova (63-@79 despite 25p8a5r from pMarcus Foster). Xavier's slump continued as well: falling at Seton Hall (64-@74 as cAngel Delgado[25p13r] starred) and at home to Butler (@79-88 as bKelan Martin[25p7r] led the way). Providence also edged Marquette (@73-69).
UCLA pulled back Arizona on the road (77-@72 despite 28p5r from bAllonzo Trier), leaving AZ tied with Oregon for the PACIFIC-12 lead. Elsewhere, USC fell at Arizona (77-@90 led by Trier[25p1a]) and tripped
at Arizona State as well.
Duke's twin squeak (road) losses knocked it out of contention in the ACC race: tripping at mediocre Syracuse (75-@78 on pJohn Gillon[26p6a]'s game-winning three-pointer) and again at rising Miami(Florida) (50-@55 as gBruce Brown[25p1a] starred). MiaFl kept Virginia in its slump with a 54-@48 road win. Meanwhile, it was North Carolina who clinched its second-straight regular season title with a @74-63 win over second-place Louisville.
Ho hum. It's such a broken record that it doesn't seem like news anymore. Guess what? Kansas won the BIG 12 race yet again! That's THIRTEEN-STRAIGHT YEARS the Jayhawks (and coach Bill Self) have claimed at least a share of the regular season title. (You have to go back to the 2004 Final Four/TiTo Oklahoma State team[coach Eddie Sutton; bTony Allen, tJoey Graham, gJohn LucasIII, fIvan McFarlin] squad to a year when KU wasn't on top.) The final blow was a @87-68 rout of TCU. This ties the record of UCLA, which also won thirteen-straight major conference titles from 1967-79 across the AAWU/PAC-8/PAC-10 (9 under coach John Wooden -- all 13 of KU's belong to coach Self). The BIG 12 has been a Top-3 conference in 9 of those years (including the top conference the past 4 years). There are no more superlatives left for this first-ballot Hall of Fame achievement -- UNTOUCHABLE!!!
Elsewhere in BIG 12 play, surging Iowa State edged Texas Tech in overtime on the road (82-@80[OT]) and then edged slumping Baylor (@72-69 thanks to only 4 turnovers despite being outrebounded 13-33 and 27p10r from bJohnathan Motley). Oklahoma State won on the road at tumbling Kansas State (80-@68) and dumped fading Texas Tech (@80-63); Kansas State tanked at Oklahoma to boot. West Virginia (and all of college basketball) got a big scare when coach Bob Huggins collapsed on the court against Texas -- thankfully, he was all right after the heart murmur episode; WVU then edged on the road at TCU (61-@60 despite shooting 3-for-14 on threes).
In the BIG 10, Purdue fell at Michigan but claimed the outright lead thanks to 0-2 weeks from both Wisconsin and Maryland. Wisc fell on Desperation Trail at Ohio State (73-@83 despite 27p from Bronson Koenig) and fell at underachieving Michigan State (74-@84 despite 22p11r4a from xNigel Hayes). Meanwhile, Maryland was handled at home by Minnesota (@75-89) and fell at DT Iowa to boot. Northwestern's bid for its first-ever NCAA berth took a hit with two losses: dumped at Illinois and tripped at Iowa.
Florida's big week was only a 1-1 split: the Gators dumped South Carolina (@81-66 behind bKeVaughn Allen[26p7r] despite 23p10r from cSindarius Thornwell); then, in the first-place showdown, it was Kentucky who rallied at home to beat Fla (@76-66 as pMalik Monk[33p5a6to] took over in the second half).
Cincinnati fell out of its first-place tie with SMU after tripping at UCF (49-@53 behind B.J. Taylor[27p]); but not before helping dash Memphis' postseason prospects: Memph fell at Cincy (74-@87 despite 23p10a from Jeremiah Martin) and then tripped at home against Houston (@71-72 on tDamyean Dotson[31p9r]'s star turn).
Both Wichita State and Illinois State closed 2-0 to share the MISSOURI VALLEY regular season title (with an EIGHT-GAME GAP on the rest of the field). It's the FOURTH-STRAIGHT TITLE for WichSt and the first in 20 years for IllSt.
In the ATLANTIC 10, VCU fell out of first place with a road loss at Rhode Island (59-@69 thanks to 31-for-39 free-throw shooting); leaving Dayton alone on top with one week to go.
In the MOUNTAIN WEST, Nevada won on the road at Boise State in their first-place showdown (85-@77 on 30-for-34 free-throw shooting led by pMarcus Marshall[26p8a] and xCameron Oliver(21p5a11r); Nev and Colorado State remained tied for the lead with one week left.
CONFERENCE USA/Middle Tennessee edged UAB on the road (66-@64) to clinch the regular season title (with a three-game gap). COLONIAL/UNC-Wilmington edged Towson (@83-78 as C.J. Bryce[28p] countered 33p6r from fWilliam Adala Moto) and went 2-0 on the week to clinch its third-straight COLONIAL title. In the SUN BELT Wars, Texas-Arlington won on the road at Georgia Southern (81-@71 dominating the boards 41-17 as xKevin Hervey[28p13r;5/6 3s] starred despite 27p from Ike Smith) in another first-place showdown; GaSo kept its slim title hopes alive with a road win of its own at Arkansas State (72-@60 behind xIke Smith[21p10r2a] holding the Red Wolves to 4-for-23 on threes). In the HORIZON, Valparaiso won on the road at Wright State (84-@74), but tripped
at Northern Kentucky (78-@82 despite 25p4a from gTevonn Walker) to go 2-1 on the week; while Oakland won on the road at Green Bay (85-@72) and went 3-0 as Valpo/Oak shared the regular season title (the third-straight for Valpo). SOUTHERN/East Tennessee State edged Furman in overtime (@93-81[OT] on 61 percent shooting led by pT.J. Cromer[32p5a]'s star turn) to earn a share of the regular season title (with one game left). MID-AMERICAN/Akron tripped at Bowling Green but won on the road at Buffalo -- going 1-1 on the week was good enough to clinch its second-straight regular season title (with a three-game gap).
SUMMIT/North Dakota State tripped at Omaha while South Dakota went 2-0 on the road to clinch the regular season title. WAC/Cal State-Bakersfield went 2-0 (while New Mexico State fell against Utah Valley) to clinch its first-ever D-I conference title. BIG SOUTH/UNC-Asheville tripped at Gardner-Webb (76-@81 despite 25p from Ahmad Thomas) but regrouped to rout Liberty (@63-45 on bAhmad Thomas[31p4a6r]'s star turn holding the Flames to 3-for-24 on three-pointers); meanwhile, Winthrop went 2-0 as both UNCA/Winthp(repeat) shared the regular season title. In the SOUTHLAND, New Orleans dumped Stephen F. Austin but tripped at Northwestern State to cling to a one-game lead. IVY/Princeton went 2-0 on the road to clinch the regular season title (but this year it'll have to win the new 4-team conference tournament in order to earn an NCAA bid). ATLANTIC SUN/Florida Gulf Coast beat Stetson to clinch the regular season title.
In the BIG WEST, UC-Irvine tripped at Cal Sate-Fullerton while UC-Davis went 2-0 on the week to put the race in a first-place tie with a week to go. In the BIG SKY, Eastern Washington knocked Weber State out of first place with an @82-72 win (led by Bodgan Bliznyuk[25p]); Weber fell back further, tripping in overtime at Idaho -- leaving North Dakota alone on top with a week left. MEAC/North Carolina Central went 2-0 allowing it to clinch the regular season title (for the THIRD TIME IN FOUR YEARS [with a two-game gap]).

There are still some regular season races yet to be decided:
Florida must beat visiting Arkansas (Wednesday) (and still get some help from leader Kentucky) at the close of the SEC race. Purdue needs a road win at Northwestern (Saturday) to lock up the BIG 10 title. Cincinnati must beat visiting Houston (Thursday) (and still get some help from leader SMU) at the close of the AMERICAN race.
Dayton hosts VCU in the final A-10 showdown (Wednesday). Nevada hosts Colorado State in the final MWC showdown (Saturday). The SUN BELT Wars conclude with Georgia State visiting Arkansas State (Monday) and hosting arch-/state-rival Georgia Southern (Saturday). UNC-Greensboro can turn the SOCON into a triumvirate (along with Furman) if it can beat visiting league-leader East Tennessee State (Monday).
UC-Irvine hosts UC-Davis in the final BIG WEST showdown (Saturday). Texas Southern has a tough close hosting Alcorn State in the final SWAC showdown (Thursday) and then Southern (Saturday).
The only true Anti-Spoiler team this year is Wichita State(MVC) -- if Illinois State can pull off the upset win, WichSt still gets an At-Large bid (and takes one away from The Bubble); if WichSt comes through, IllSt is S.O.L.. Just in case, don't forget to catch
these Off-Broadway 1BC stars in their conference tournaments who likely won't make it to the NCAAs if their teams fail to go TiTo: pJustin Robinson(Monmouth), xKevin Hervey(Texas-Arlington), cAlec Peters(Valparaiso), cEvan Bradds(Belmont), pIan Baker(New Mexico State).
FOUR-TiTo [1]Gonzaga won't stumble against [2]St. Mary's or [3]BYU in the WCC tourney (Friday through Tuesday week).
Only FOUR-PEAT [1b]Wichita State has a chance at an At-Large bid if it doesn't win the MVC tourney (Thursday through Sunday) -- [1a]Illinois State has no path to the NCAAs without winning it all. Repeat/4-GAP [1]Monmouth(pJustin Robinson) should roll through the MAAC tourney (Thursday through Monday week). Three-peat [1]UNC-Wilmington will have it tough getting past host [2]College of Charleston in the COLONIAL tourney (Friday through Monday week). Three-peat [1b]Valparaiso(cAlec Peters) hopes "the third time's the charm" to get past [1a]Oakland in the HORIZON tourney (Friday through Tuesday week). It's a toss-up among East Tennessee State, Furman and UNC-Greensboro for the SOCON tourney crown (Friday through Monday week).
UNBEATEN 4-GAP [1]Vermont playing at home can't miss in the AMER E tourney (Wednesday through Saturday week). Home court should be the edge for repeat [1a]Winthrop over [1b]UNC-Asheville in the BIG SOUTH tourney (Tuesday through Sunday). 5-GAP [E1/1]Belmont(cEvan Bradds) playing in Nashville is a no-brainer in the OVC tourney (Wednesday through Saturday). [1]South Dakota still has something to prove to get past [2]North Dakota State in the SUMMIT tourney (Saturday through Tuesday week). Home court should be more than enough for THREE-PEAT/3-gap [1]Bucknell in the PATRIOT tourney (Tuesday through Wednesday week). Home court should carry [1]Florida Gulf Coast to the A-SUN crown (Monday through Sunday). Home court should carry [1]Mount St. Mary's to the NEC crown (Wednesday through Tuesday week).
