Yes, young teams can be inconsistent; but ... Come on! Kentucky has already proven itself beating Michigan State on a neutral court in the CHAMPIONS CLASSIC; yet somehow it managed to lose at home to unheralded Evansville, @64-67. The Purple Aces didn't do anything special to earn the (squeak) road win; neither did the K-Wildcats do anything special to lose (beyond shooting 4-for-17 on three-pointers). UK just didn't post, which is more disappointing in the Big Picture ... Ugh.
The BIG 10 beat the BIG EAST (5-3) in the GAVITT GAMES for the second-straight year (to lead 2-0;3 all-time). The highlight win came from Ohio State's dumping Villanova (@76-51 shooting 60 percent from the floor). Providence fell at Northwestern (63-@72) while Marquette beat Purdue (@65-55 led by Utah State transfer bKoby McEwen[23p4a5r]). A 2-1 edge in road wins provided the margin of victory as Penn State road-thumped host Georgetown (81-@66) and Michigan State edged Seton Hall (76-@73 despite 37p6r from bMyles Powell) to counter DePaul's road-rout of Iowa (93-@78 as cPaul Reed[25p12r] dominated). Elsewhere, Michigan handled Creighton at home (@79-69) while host Butler beat Minnesota (@64-56 on bKamar Baldwin[27p5r]'s star turn).
At the new HALL OF FAME-CANADA JAMES NAISMITH CLASSIC triple-header in Toronto, Washington was surprised by revamped Tennessee (62-75) while Harvard fell to retooling Buffalo (76-88) (as St. Bonaventure held off Rutgers [80-74] in the undercard). At the PHIL KNIGHT INVITATIONAL double-header at the MODA CENTER in Portland,OR, Oregon held off Memphis (@82-74 as the M-Tigers only shot 4-for-23 on threes) (as Oklahoma surprised "host" Oregon State [77-@69] in the undercard).
Elsewhere, Marquette laid an egg on the road at "Big Brother" Wisconsin (61-@77) in their annual State Title showdown. VCU edged LSU (@84-82 despite 23p3a8r from tSkylar Mays). Belmont found a new star in its road-rout of Imperially Neo-Clad host Boston college (100-@85 sinking 15-for-26 threes as gAdam Kunkel[35p] went off) as part of the round-robin GOTHAM CLASSIC.
Multiple teams with high preseason hopes disappointed: South Florida tanked at home against mediocre IUPUI (@53-70 as tMarcus Burk[26p9r] starred). Florida tripped at Connecticut (59-@62). New Mexico State tanked twice on the road: first, losing at UTEP in the first leg their home-and-home Border War; then, at mighty Arizona (53-@93) in their Border War matchup. St. Mary's might have been swept into this week's rankings (because of its neutral-site win over Wisconsin at SANFORD-A) if it hadn't tripped at home against Winthrop (@59-61). Davidson continued to disappoint, losing at mediocre Charlotte (58-@71).
Hofstra tanked at home against Bucknell (71-@86 as the Bison_ sank 15-for-28 threes). Xavier edged Missouri State (@59-56) in a CHARLESTON CLASSIC warm-up game. Baylor got past "Little Brother" Texas State (@72-63).
Wright State tripped at home against Kent State (@71-72 as xTroy Simmons[16p11r] led the way).
Central Arkansas had a rough week: first, tanking at Duke (54-@105 as the D-Blue Devils posted six players in double figures); then, tanking at home against arch-rival Little Rock (@56-76 as tMarkquis Nowell[25p8r] starred) in their annual I-40 SHOWCASE grudge match.

In tournaments, Unwelcome Guest winners were the norm. ASUN/Jacksonville, still reclassifying NEC/{Merrimack} and IVY/Dartmouth all beat up on host Massachusetts-Lowell but split with each other to share the [ML]RIVER HAWK INVITATIONAL three ways. AMERE/Stony Brook edged North Dakota State (57-53) in the "title" game of the [TXAMCC]ISLANDER INVITATIONAL (in addition to egding host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). SUMMIT/South Dakota won the H/RAINBOW CLASSIC (including beating host Hawaii [81-@75]).
SKY/Montana won the NGC/SPARTAN INVITATIONAL (including edging host UNC-Greensboro [67-@66]). Only Arkansas State managed to come through its own home showcase [AS]RED WOLF CLASSIC.
The ACC is off to a spectacular 18-2 start among high-profile inter-conference matchups. The BIG 12 is excellent as well at 13-2. The surprising MOUNTAIN WEST has broken out to a 10-0 start. The MID-AMERICAN (9-4) and SUMMIT (11-4) both are early overachievers. The BIG 10 (14-8) and BIG EAST (10-7) have started slowly.

Look for North Dakota State to put the SUMMIT up 2-0 in its continuing head-to-head CHALLENGE with the WAC (thru Tue 17 Dec). The dual double-headers of the ATLANTIC-SUN/METRO ATLANTIC CHALLENGE (Friday, Saturday) are anybody's guess.
Some bigger preseason tournaments get down to cases this week:
Belmont has already done the heavy lifting in the GOTHAM CLASSIC (Monday thru Wednesday week).
Newly ranked Wisconsin will get a stern test from new-look Auburn if both make the final of the LEGENDS CLASSIC (Sunday thru Tuesday week). Newly ranked Evansville will now have a target on its back (taking the pressure off Liberty) in the ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS SHOWCASE (Friday thru Sunday). Duke should have no trouble getting past Texas in the final of the 2K EMPIRE CLASSIC (Saturday) at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. Utah State will get a test from LSU just to make the final of the JAMAICA CLASSIC (Friday thru Sunday). Colorado should get more trouble against UC-Irvine in the warm-up phase of the LAS VEGAS-MAIN EVENT than against its B-Major opposition in the championship rounds (Sunday thru Tuesday week). Cincinnati, Western Kentucky and Bowling Green all have their sights set on winning the PARADISE JAM (Friday thru Monday week). Xavier will get a stiff challenge from both Missouri State and Florida in the CHARLESTON CLASSIC (Thursday thru Sunday).
Villanova is still the favorite (past four B-Major challengers) in the MYRTLE BEACH INVITATIONAL (Thursday thru Sunday). Virginia should be able to handle any challenge (including Vermont in the warm-up phase) of the HALL OF FAME-CT TIP-OFF (Saturday thru Sunday). St. Mary's should win the feature matchup against Fresno State (Wednesday) at GOLDEN 1 ARENA in the SACRAMENTO CLASSIC. Louisville has no real challengers in the home showcase GS SHOOTOUT (thru Sunday). Host Ohio State should cruise at home in its own [OS]BUCKEYE CLASSIC (thru Saturday week). Air Force and Indiana State lead a close field in the JUNKANOO JAM (Thursday thru Sunday). Central Michigan, host Minnesota as well as DePaul all have shot in the [M]GOLDEN GOPHER INVITATIONAL (Thursday thru Friday week). Perhaps the worst field of the preseason belongs to Incarnate Word's 3-round robin should-be showcase [IW]CARDINAL INVITATIONAL (Friday thru Sunday).
