("Town No Go")
The feature matchup in the fourth annual GAVITT GAMES (BIG 10/BIG EAST CHALLENGE) was arematch of last year's National Championship final when Villanova hosted Michigan. The Wolverines ore than paid back the V/Wildcats with a dominant road win (73-@46 allowing only one double-figure scorer). The story may be more about Nova's ineptness, though, as later in the week, VU lost again at home (in overtime) against Furman, (@68-76[OT]). For the Paladins, it was their SECOND ROAD WIN AGAINST LAST YEAR'S FINAL FOUR (after winning at Loyola[Illinois] last week).
The BIG 10 won GAVITT 5-3 (after the leagues officially split 4-4 the previous three years). Most notably, Indiana routed Marquette (@96-73 shooting 64 percent from the floor); Wisconsin surprised Xavier on the road (77-@68 as xEthan Happ[30p13r5a] dominated); and Ohio State won on the road at Creighton (69-@60). Conversely, DePaul edged Penn State in overtime (@72-70[OT] despite 25p12r from cLamar Stevens); Georgetown won on the road at Illinois (88-@80); and St. John's road-routed Rutgers (84-@65 sinking 16-for-32 three-pointers as Hardship Transfer bMustapha Heron[27p6r] starred).
The BIG 10 further asserted its prowess by winning two tournaments. 2K EMPIRE at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN was supposed to be a showdown between Syracuse and Oregon; instead, those two met for third place. Connecticut knocked off 'Cuse (83-76 despite 26p7r6to from freshman bJalen Carey) while Iowa beat Ore (77-69). In the final, Iowa routed UConn (91-72 as fTylerCook[26p8r] starred) while Ore thumped 'Cuse for third (80-65 as GC [Manute's son] 7-2 fBol Bol[26p9r] led the way). In the HALL OF FAME-CT TIP OFF final at the MOHEGAN SUN in Uncasville, Michigan capped off a stellar week, dumping Providence (66-47 dominating the boards 47-27).
In the ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS SHOWCASE final in Nassau, it was SUNB/Georgia Southern who edged SKY/Montana (80-77). In the CHARLESTON CLASSIC, Northeastern knocked off Alabama right away (68-52), but it was ACC/Virginia Tech who took the title over Purdue (89-83 as fNickell Alexander-Walker[25p7r] dueled 26p7a from pCarsen Edwards). ThePUERTO RICO TIP-OFFMYRTLE BEACH INVITATIONAL was supposed to be about Western Kentucky/West Virginia - - and WKy did beat WVa (63-57); but it was AMER/UCF who cruised through the draw, including thumping WKy in the final (78-62 despite 25p10r from GC cCharles Bassey).
At the new JUNKANOO JAM in Bimini,BAHAMAS, everybody beat San Jose State, but SKY/Weber State, WAC/Cal State-Bakersfield and MAC/Central Michigan all split 1-1 between themselves to share the crown.
The Consolation bracket of 2K EMPIRE was banished to Cheney,WA where HORIZ/Green Bay was an Unwelcome Guest winner (including 82-@78[OT] over host Eastern Washington). With both Evansville and Texas Southern playing foil in multiple warm-up games in the MAUI INVITATIONAL, MVC/Evans' home win over TexasSo (@85-63 despite 26p7r from GT bJalyn Patterson) qualifies as winning Consolation.
A10/Fordham(JOHN BACH CLASSIC), IVY/Brown(BEAR TIP-OFF CLASSIC) and HORIZ/Northern Kentucky(NORSE CLASSIC) all played host to full 3-round robin tournaments ... and all came away with their home showcase crowns.
LSU knocked off Memphis (@85-76) in a warm-up game of the A/ORLANDO INVITATIONAL.
Wright State handled Toledo (@84-74 dominating the boards 48-27 as Cole Gentry[30p1a] starred). Belmont edged arch-/city-rival Lipscomb on the road (87-@83) in Part I of the BATTLE OF THE BOULEVARD. South Dakota State fell at unheralded Florida Gulf Coast (78-@84 despite 29p from gDavid Jenkins).
Two weeks in, the BIG 10 is now 38-6 (with 2 tourney crowns) in major interconference match-ups; the BIG 12 is a spectacular 18-2 itself; while the ACC (1 crown) is more than respectable at 28-6. (Meanwhile, bottom-feeders the MEAC [1-22] and SWAC [0-22] have already lost contact with all but the disappointing SOUTHLAND [4-20] and SUMMIT [2-10].)

It doesn't quite fall under "Rigging The System", but it's more the B-Majors' flexing their muscles. In three of the four 2x4 events in LAS VEGAS this year, the Consolation bracket teams have either been banished to a lesser venue or exiled all together: The LAS VEGAS-HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL moved its semifinals (Nevada et al.) from SOUTH POINT to the morning session at ORLEANS (sending its Consolation teams to Little Rock,AR) while the LAS VEGAS-THANKSGIVING semifinals (North Carolina-Texas, Michigan State-UCLA) remain in the evening session at ORLEANS (while its Consolation teams play round-robin games on-campus). Meanwhile, the LAS VEGAS-MAIN EVENT semis (Mississippi State et al.) are at T-MOBILE (while the Consolation bracket plays out at COX gym on UNLV's campus). (I guess it's as simple as there being more money to be had from larger alumni bases from the bigger schools.) At least the Consolation bracket teams in the LAS VEGAS-CHRISTMAS CLASSIC in December still get to play at ORLEANS. Worse, {Chaminade} - - the host of the MAUI INVITATIONAL has been relegated to mainland warm-up games (only participating in the on-island bracket in alternate years going forward - - UGH.)
The MAUI INVITATIONAL (Monday-Wednesday) has the toughest draw of the preseason (Gonzaga, Duke, Auburn, Xavier). Also with strong fields are the NIT SEASON TIP-OFF (Wednesday, Friday; Tennessee, Kansas, Marquette), the BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS (Monday-Friday; Virginia, Wisconsin, Florida), the LAS VEGAS-THANKSGIVING INVITATIONAL (Monday-Wednesday week; North Carolina, Michigan State, UCLA, Texas), and the A/ORLANDO INVITATIONAL (Monday-Sunday; Florida State, LSU, Memphis, Villanova).
Nevada should have the LAS VEGAS-HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL to itself (Monday-Saturday). Kansas State only needs to beat Missouri in the final to finish off the PARADISE JAM (Monday). Clemson should have its way in the CAYMAN ISLANDS CLASSIC (Monday-Wednesday) as should Mississippi State in the LAS VEGAS-MAIN EVENT (Monday-Wednesday), Buffalo in the HALL OF FAME-BELFAST CLASSIC (Tuesday-Saturday week) and St. John's in the LEGENDS CLASSIC (Monday-Tuesday).
Marshall doesn't play host Maryland inside the TERRAPIN SHOWCASE (Monday-Friday). Host North Carolina State doesn't play North Texas inside the WOLFPACK CLASSIC (Tuesday-Saturday week).
UC-Irvine already has two road wins as a foil to B-Major hosts in the new VANCOUVER SHOWCASE; but can the Anteaters win a neutral-site 8-bracket draw like the GULF COAST SHOWCASE (Monday-Wednesday)? Washington should prevail in the new VANCOUVER SHOWCASE (Tuesday-Wednesday). Loyola(Illinois)' disappointing start means winning the new FT. MYER'S TIP-OFF (Monday-Saturday) might not be so easy. Penn State is still the favorite in the CANCUN CHALLENGE (Tuesday-Wednesday).
The CBE CLASSIC (Monday-Tuesday), WOODEN LEGACY/ANAHEIM CLASSIC (Tuesday-Sunday), EMERALD COAST CLASSIC (Monday-Saturday), JAMAICA CLASSIC (Wednesday-Saturday) all are essentially up for grabs.
     Kentucky[OHIO VALLEY] (Tuesday-Friday), Rutgers[HUB CITY] (Monday-Friday), Ohio State[BUCKEYE] (Tuesday-Sunday), Notre Dame[GOTHAM] (Tuesday), Georgia Tech[DEEP SOUTH] (Monday-Friday) and Vanderbilt[COMMODORE] (Monday-Tuesday week) all should win their round-robin home showcases.
In the new BIG SKY/SUMMIT CHALLENGE (Saturday-Sat 22 Dec; in which the top teams do Double Duty while the weaker ones sit out), look for SKY to find a way to squeeze out a 5-3 win (maybe even in the feature match-up with Montana stealing a road win from disappointing South Dakota State).
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
