"Beware Of The Gael!"
It sounds like a broken record; but, "Here we go again!". Just when it looked like no less than three teams were having better seasons than the thirteen-time defending champs, Kansas took control of the BIG 12 race with a couple of (squeak) wins: the Jayhawks edged top-ranked West Virginia on the road (71-@66 despite 16p10r5b from cSagaba Konate) and then escaped at home against Baylor (@70-67 led by tDevonte' Graham[15p7a8r]). Meanwhile, teams have figured out how to take advantage of weaknesses of Oklahoma's one-man-team attack: first, Kansas State thumped the Sooners (@87-69 as pTrae Young[20p6a12to;8/21] was hounded into one of his worst performances of the season; then, arch-/state-rival Oklahoma State edged OU in overtime (@81-80[OT] as 48p8a5r7to from pTrae Young was complemented by no teammates in double-figures). Elsewhere, Texas Tech (only a week after its #1-vs-#2 showdown) fell twice: first, at Texas (58-@67) and then tanking at Iowa State (52-@70). (OU has more of an adjustment getting away from being such a One-Man Show while TxT is still fundamentally solid and more able to get past a momentary slump.) KansSt completed its best week with a (squeak) win over TCU (@73-68). Earlier, Baylor dumped OkSt (@76-60 led by Manu Lecomte[30p]).
In the BIG EAST, Seton Hall had a disastrous week: first, tanking at Creighton (63-@80 as Marcus Foster[25p] led the way while only one Pirate posted double-figures); then, SetonH fell at home against Xavier (@64-73 as bJ.P. Macura[27p5r] led the Musketeers). Meanwhile, Providence had its best week in a while, sweeping two games: first, against Butler (@70-60 despite 25p7r from bKamar Baldwin); and then, against Creighton (@85-71 led by xAlpha Diallo[21p10r]).
It sounds like a broken record; but, "Here we go again!". Just when it looked like Clemson had a great chance to end its "oh-for-Chapel Hill" losing streak, North Carolina won again (@87-79 sinking 15-for-31 three-pointers despite 21p5r5s from bMarquis Reed) to make it 59-0 (AND COUNTING) at home head-to-head against the Tigers (extending its NCAA-record run). Florida State fell at Boston College (75-@81 as xKy Bowman[19p5a13r6to] led the Eagles); but the Seminoles bounced back to outpace Virginia Tech on the road (91-@82 despite 26p6a from pJustin Robinson). Duke got back in the conversation (if not the actual race) in the ACC, winning on the road at Miami(Florida) (83-@75 on bGary Trent Jr.[30p5r]'s star turn). Undermanned Notre Dame couldn't hang: tripping in double-overtime at home to Louisville (@78-82[2OT] despite 22p17r from cMartinas Geben); and then falling at Clem (58-@67 as the Irish only shot two free throws the entire game).
In the SEC, Alabama brought Auburn back to the pack with a squeak win (@76-71). Meanwhile, young Kentucky stumbled twice: first, falling at South Carolina (68-@76 as fChris Silva[27p8r] starred); and then, tripping at home against Florida (@64-66). Missouri pulled down Tennessee with a squeak win of its own (@59-55). Florida's big week began by thumping Arkansas (@88-73 as gKeVaughn Allen[28p] countered 28 from Jaylen Barford) to move the Gators into a tie for first place with Aub, both two games ahead of the rest of the pack.
In the BIG 10, Nebraska dumped Michigan (@72-52 despite 15p2a8r from tCharles Matthews). Meanwhile, the wheels have come off completely at Minnesota: such a promising start to the season has completely unravelled. Off the court, cReggie Lynch has been expelled from school (for sexual misconduct); on the court, the Golden Gophers dropped two: falling at Maryland (66-@77 led by pAnthony Cowan[15p10a6r]) and getting dumped at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN by Ohio State (@49-@67) as part of the BIG 10 SUPER SATURDAY event (in a venue warm-up preview for the conference tournament).
Wichita State's seemless jump up to B-Major conference play in the AMERICAN finally hit a snag as the Wheatshockers lost twice: first, tripping at home against SMU (@78-83 as the Mustangs shot 64 percent led by pShake Milton[33p5a] despite 20p10a from pLandry Shamet); and then, falling at Houston (59-@73 as only one WichSt player managed double-figures). Tulane did its best to get in the mix, beating Hous (@81-72) but falling at SMU (62-@73 despite 27p7r from bMelvin Frazier).
In the PACIFIC-12, surprising Stanford couldn't keep up the pace: despite beating plummeting Arizona (@86-77), the Cardinal couldn't pull of the home double, tripping against Arizona (@71-73) in what was effectively a first-half showdown in the title race. Meanwhile, UCLA fell twice on the road: losing at mediocre Oregon State (63-@69) and tripping at disappointing Oregon (91-@94 as Payton Pritchard[25p] led the way). Surprising Washington also fell off the pace of the top contenders, falling at Utah (62-@70 as xJustin Bibbins[20p5a10r] starred).
It sounds like a broken record, but ... NO, WAIT! SOMEBODY FLIPPED THE SCRIPT! In the first-half Game Of The Year showdown in the WEST COAST, it was St. Mary's who pulled off the shocking (squeak) road upset, edging host Gonzaga in the Kennel (74-@71 as cJock Landale[25p12r] turned in a Player Of The Year performance). With the road win secured, the Gaels have a great chance to make only the second dent to the seventeen-year run of regular season titles by the Bulldogs.
In the MOUNTAIN WEST, it was Nevada taking control with a home win in the first-half showdown with Boise State (@74-68 as Caleb Martin[28p1a] dueled 27p5r from bChandler Hutchinson). Young UNLV tripped at home against spoiler New Mexico (@81-85). Meanwhile, disappointing San Diego State fell out of contention entirely with two (squeak) losses: tripping at home against Fresno State (@73-77) and tripping on the road at NM (75-@79).
WAC/New Mexico State easily put away Utah Valley in what passed as a first-place showdown on paper, dumping Utah Valley (@86-59).
In the MISSOURI VALLEY, Loyola(Illinois) handled Southern Illinois (@79-65 led by Donte Ingram[25p]). Meanwhile, in a surprising showdown, upstart Drake edged slumping Missouri State (@61-58).
In the competitive SUN BELT, streaking Louisiana handled Texas-Arlington on the road (77-@65 as Frank Barkley IV[26p] countered 25p9r from tKevin Hervey). Meanwhile, Georgia State thumped arch-/state-rival Georgia Southern (@83-66 led by xD'Marcus Simonds[24p6a10r]).
Inside the Red Swirl, OHIO VALLEY/Belmont knocked off Murray State in a showdown for first place. Surprising East Tennessee State remained unbeaten in the SOUTHERN, edging Furman on the road (62-@61). In the MID-AMERICAN, Ball State knocked off slumping Central Michigan (@82-76 despite 26p14r from cLuke Meyer). In CONFERENCE USA, Western Kentucky couldn't pull off the double in its toughest week: after beating UAB (@77-69), the Hilltoppers tripped at home in its first-place showdown with Middle Tennessee (@62-66 as tNick King[28p9r3a]'s starred); UAB compounded its woes with an overtime loss at Marshall (78-@86[OT] despite 28p14r from cChris Cokley). Disappointing Towson fell out of contention in the COLONIAL with an overtime loss at UNC-Wilmington (71-@73[OT]). In the BIG WEST, UC-Santa Barbara thumped
Cal State-Fullerton (@83-64).
In FlopCity/Nation, surprising Wright State tripped inside the HORIZON at Milwaukee (61-@66 led by xBrock Stull[17p6a11r]). Yale tripped inside the IVY at Brown (80-@81). BIG SOUTH/Winthrop dumped UNC-Asheville in a first-place showdown (@85-58 despite 20p2a11r from xAhmad Thomas). ATLANTIC SUN/Florida Gulf Coast took complete control with a (squeak) road win in the first-half Game Of The Year at Lipscomb (88-@83). NORTHEAST/Wagner handled Robert Morris in its first-place showdown (@62-49) while disappointing Mount St. Mary's fell out of contention with two losses: falling at St. Francis(New York) (73-@81 led by tRasheem Dunn[15p10a6r]) and tripping at Fairleigh Dickinson (72-@73). Morgan State fell off the pace in the MEAC with two losses: falling at North Carolina Central (63-@77 despite 28p from Tiwian Kendley) and tripping in overtime at city-rival Coppin State (73-@80[OT] despite 26p3a from gKendley). In the SWAC, Jackson State beat Prairie View A&M (@79-71 led by Jeremiah Jefferson[28p]) but tanked at home against Grambling State (@45-72).
