Willin' Graysie: The Reboot
The unofficial start of the College Basketball season (especially now that ESPN has abandoned its 24-hour TIP-OFF MARATHON) has been the CHAMPIONS CLASSIC double-header (for seven years now, this year at the UNITED CENTER in Chicago) between young Duke and Michigan State (billed as "No.1 vs No.2" elsewhere, but not here) and young Kentucky and Kansas. So early in the season, the quality of the games (and the cohesion of the teams) isn't great but it still whets your appetite for the campaign to come. The Blue Devils and Spartans went back and forth with DU rallying to win @88-@81 as gGrayson Allen had a career-high 37 points (on 7-for-11 three-point shooting) while GC pTrevon Duval[17p10a6r] was great. gAllen's college run has been up and down: he hardly played as a freshman (except for a key stretch in the 2015 National Championship final); he entered both his sophomore and junior years as Preseason All-American (if not Player Of The Year) only to disappoint in his performance (compounded by ugly incidents tripping opponents). He enters this year with less fanfare (but also with the most talent around him since he's been a key player) ... he certainly came through for his team (and himself) to start his senior year. MichSt did manage 25 assists in the shootout, but no one Spartan truly stood out. Kentucky had already shown vulnerability (in leadership, cohesiveness and three-point shooting) and the loss to retooling Kansas didn't change any of those perceptions. Kansas didn't look fantastic, but the Jayhawks did a better job of managing a win while they still work out their own identity.
The GAVITT TIP-OFF GAMES between the BIG 10 and BIG EAST wound up a 4-4 tie (officially, for the third-straight year). Most impressive was the road win by Minnesota at Providence (86-@74 led by cJordan Murphy[23p14r]); Creighton won a shootout on the road at Northwestern (92-@88 thanks to xKhyri Thomas[24p11r5a] despite 30p5r from bVic Law); Xavier handled host Wisconsin (80-@70 behind tTrevon Bluiett[25p9r;10/10ft] and 20-for-23 on free throws overall); Purdue thumped host Marquette (86-@71 despite 25p6a5to from 5-10 pAndrew Rowsey); everyone one else defended safely at home.
Last year's darling, veteran Northwestern, has found it tough being The Hunted early on: on top of their home loss in GAVITT, the Wildcats were pounded in the final of the HALL OF FAME-C TIP-OFF at the MOHEGAN SUN in Uncasville CT as Texas Tech won (85-49 paced by Keenan Evans[25p] while NU only shot 27 percent from the floor with just one scorer in double-figures). Star-crossed Rhode Island fell at retooling Nevada (81-@88 on cJordan Caroline[28p12r3a]'s big performance) ... the Rams' oft-injured gE.C. Mathews out again (this time for a month with a wrist injury ... Ay, Ay, Ay!)
Unlike Nwn, Providence rebounded from its GAVITT woes by winning the 2K CLASSIC at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, getting past Washington (77-70) in the semis and dumping St. Louis in the final (90-63 on 62 percent shooting). (Meanwhile, Virginia Tech couldn't get past StLou in the semis [71-77] but pounded Wash for third-place [103-79] thanks to 15-for-22 on three-pointers led by Justin Bibbs[30p]). Wichita State dashed the hopes of Splashworthy College of Charleston (@81-63 controlling the boards 44-27 and limiting the Cougars to just 4 assists). Fortified San Diego State dropped a disappointing result, tanking at retooling Arizona State (68-@90 as pTra Holder[27p6a] starred, backed by cRomello White[16p15r]).
In other tournaments, Temple claimed a couple of B-Major wins (88-74 past Auburn and 67-@60 against "host" Clemson) to win the CHARLESTON CLASSIC. Iowa State regrouped from an 0-2 start to take the Mid-Major PUERTO RICO TIP-OFF (relocated to Myrtle Beach SC[Coastal Carolina]; over Boise State in the final (75-64 led by Donovan Jackson[25p]). Colorado took the PARADISE JAM crown (relocated to Lynchburg VA[Liberty]; over Mercer in the final, 79-70). Vermont had to rally from 17-down in the final to take the new ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS SHOWCASE (66-64 over Northern Kentucky controlling the boards 38-20 led by cAnthony Lamb[26p10r] on Trae Bell-Haynes' game-winner). Host Milwaukee had to share its BLACK & GOLD SHOOTOUT with Unwelcome Guest Elon (escaping @72-71 head-to-head) and despite losing at home to non-Division I {Concordia-St. Paul}. Host Hawaii went 3-0 to claim the RAINBOW CLASSIC yet again (squeaking past both Troy and North Dakota along the way).
All around the nation, it was slim pickings for 1BC hopefuls: In the PUERTO RICO TIP-OFF, Western Michigan tanked at South Carolina (60-@78), fell versus Tulsa (74-81) and fell again to SCar (66-@79). Inside the LAS VEGAS-A THANKSGIVING INVITATIONAL, UC-Irvine tanked at Kansas State (49-@71) and at Arizona State (78-@99). Kansas dumped South Dakota State (@98-64 on 61 percent shooting led by bSviatoslav Mykhailiuk[27p5r] despite 21p11r from xMike Daum). Purdue pounded Fairfield (@106-64 sinking 19-for-31 three-pointers led by xVince Edwards[21p11r] and pCarsen Edwards[18p6a5r] while the Stags shot 5-for-13 on free throws). Murray State tripped at home against Middle Tennessee
(@67-72).
Bucknell at least kept from being totally blown out, falling at North Carolina (81-@93 as UNC sank 25-for-33 free throws controlling the boards 47-28) and tripping at Maryland (78-@80). UNC-Asheville tripped at Vanderbilt (76-@79) (and tripped in overtime at Austin Peay as well, 79-@82[OT]). In the first of a home-and-home series this preseason, Missouri State tripped at home against North Dakota State
(@54-57). Yale fell at Albany (72-@80).
A 16-0 week (including the HALL OF FAME-C and PUERTO RICO crowns) pushed the BIG 12 way out front in the overall ratings (21-2 overall in prime matchups). The BIG EAST (24-6; 2K), BIG 10 (31-6), SEC (27-6), PACIFIC-12 (16-3; PARADISE), ACC (20-9) and AMERICAN (15-7; CHARLESTON) have already separated themselves from the rest of the conferences. The MOUNTAIN WEST (13-9), MID-AMERICAN (14-9), ATLANTIC-10 (16-12), MISSOURI VALLEY (12-9) and WEST COAST (6-4) all
hung in with winning records.

Thanksgiving is always the biggest weekend of the preseason and this year is no exception with several new events on tap: Duke shouldn't have a real challenge from Florida or Gonzaga in taking the new PHIL KNIGHT-80-A INVITATIONAL bracket (Thursday-Sunday). It's now Purdue more than Villanova who stands as the biggest challenger to mighty Arizona to win the BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS (Wednesday-Friday). Minnesota is the class of the BROOKLYN-THANKSGIVING field at BARCLAYS CENTER (Friday-Saturday). It's now Creighton (not UCLA) who's the favorite to win the CBE CLASSIC in Kansas City (Monday-Tuesday). Xavier won't exactly cruise but is still the clear favorite (past Kansas State/Arizona State) to take the LAS VEGAS-A THANKSGIVING INVITATIONAL at ORLEANS ARENA (Thursday-Friday). cBonzie Colson should be the difference in an expected Notre Dame/Wichita State final at the MAUI INVITATIONAL (Monday-Wednesday). Seton Hall is a bigger favorite now over depleted Rhode Island to win the NIT SEASON TIP-OFF at BARCLAYS CENTER
(Thursday-Friday). It's a toss-up among North Carolina, Michigan State and "host" Oregon in the PHIL KNIGHT-B INVITATIONAL bracket (Thursday-Sunday). The ADOLPH RUPP CLASSIC (Monday-Sunday) is just a home showcase for host Kentucky. TCU should have no problem claiming the EMERALD COAST CLASSIC crown (Friday-Saturday). Cincinnati will get a strong challenge from UAB in the expected final of the new CAYMAN ISLANDS CLASSIC (Monday-Wednesday). St. Mary's shouldn't have a real challenger (after San Diego State's disappointing start) in taking the WOODEN LEGACY/ANAHEIM CLASSIC (Thursday-Sunday) ... (and winning is a must if the Gaels hope to make the WEST COAST a true B-Major this season).
It's now College of Charleston's chance to match Vermont as a Splashworthy tourney champ by taking the GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT (Wednesday-Saturday).
Losing GC fMichael Porter Jr. is a blow to Missouri's season hopes (and to the lustre of the draw) at the A/ORLANDO INVITATIONAL (Thursday-Sunday) ... West Virginia is a favorite among the other B-Major teams (St. John's, Nebraska, Oregon State and Mizzou). The Oklahoma State/Texas A&M semifinal winner will be favored over either Penn State/Pittsburgh to win the LEGENDS CLASSIC at the BARCLAYS CENTER (Monday-Tuesday). "Host" UNLV should have enough to overcome Mississippi/Utah to take the LAS VEGAS-B MAIN EVENT at T-MOBILE ARENA (Monday, Wednesday). The HOOSIER TIP-OFF CLASSIC (Indiana; Monday-Saturday), the GS INVITATIONAL (Illinois; Wednesday-Friday) and the new SHOWCASE ON THE BANKS (Rutgers; Monday-Friday) all are just a home showcases for their hosts.
A chance to turn their leagues from 1BC to multi-bid Mid-Major is on the line for the winner of the CANCUN CHALLENGE (Tuesday-Wednesday) ... (it's a toss-up among Fresno State/Evansville and George Mason/Louisiana Tech). The MABC-B SHOWCASE (at Air Force, at Pacific; Monday-Sunday) and the GRAND CANYON CLASSIC (at Grand Canyon; San Diego, at Little Rock; Monday-Sunday) both are home showcases for their hosts (but with strong challengers).
The Georgia Southern/Missouri State first-round winner can give itself a shot at being an Anti-Spoiler come March if it goes on to win the GULF COAST SHOWCASE at Estero FL (Monday-Wednesday). There's no clear favorite among Kent State/Valparaiso and Loyola(Illinois)/UNC-Wilmington at the SAVANNAH INVITATIONAL (Friday-Saturday). "Host" South Dakota has a leg up in the SANFORD-B CHALLENGE (Friday-Sunday). Bowling Green (at Campbell's CREEK CLASSIC [Friday-Sunday]), Denver (at Florida Gulf Coast's EAGLE SHOOTAROUND [Friday-Sunday]), Delaware (at UNC-Greensboro's SPARTAN CLASSIC [Monday-Sunday]) and Fairfield (at Wright State's RAIDER CLASSIC [Friday-Sunday]) all hope to be Unwelcome Guest champions.
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
