16 Mar21 -- ACC-nado II

Volume XX, No. 20 - 16 Mar21

ACC-nado II
(It's always a tricky thing to root for "The Good Guys". It's very easy lose yourself in all kinds of biases when you look at things in terms of "good" and "bad". Question: Which NCAA school had its captain not only dismissed from the team in February but expelled from school after (allegedly) raping another student? Surprise, it's America's new darlings -- [W12]@Yale. Last year's cult hero, gJack Montague (who sank the baseline three-pointer to beat state-rival Connecticut for the first time in 30 years), is no longer around. If the name on the jerseys was "MIAMI" and this were a black player, would the upset of [W5]Baylor still have been such a "feel good story"? It's hard to see clearly from inside bias. One of my biggest pet peeves is this: I wish someone would take a motion capture video of an NHL hockey fight and then re-animate it substituting black NBA players instead and then show that doctored video to the average person and see what their reaction is. The NHL all but markets its "toughness" as "Men being Men" yet NBA players are labeled "thugs" for even taking one swing. But you gotta love those darling Yalies, eh? Ugh.)
The dead weight at the bottom of the Mega-ACC prevented it from being rated first overall as a whole -- (it couldn't beat the BIG 10 top-to-bottom in their CHALLENGE for the SEVENTH-STRAIGHT YEAR) -- but its elite teams are as good as any: (Even without Louisville), its seven NCAA teams went 12-1, placing six teams into the Sweet 16 -- a new record (topping the five teams it sent just last year). [E1]@North Carolina cruised in the cosy confines of the perennial "ACC Pod" (in Raleigh, this year) including rolling past [E9]Providence (@85-66 despite 29p3a from gKris Dunn). Big Brother [M1]Virginia put away Little Brother [M16]Hampton (81-45) in a NCAA-forced-them-to-play first-round game and then handled [M9]Butler (77-69). Solid [S3]Miami(Florida) put an end to the glorious college careers of pFred Van Vleet and bRon Baker of [S11b]Wichita State (65-57). Big Brother [W4]Duke beat NCAA-forced-them-to-play Little Brother [W13]UNC-Wilmington in the first round (93-85) and then turned Cinderella [W12]@Yale back into a pumpkin (71-@64 paced by GC bBrandon Ingram[25p5r]). [E6]Notre Dame beat Play-In [E11a]Michigan (70-63) and then escaped against giant-killer [E14]Stephen F. Austin (76-75 on tRex Pflueger's game-winning putback). Shouldn't-have-gotten-a-bid [M10]Syracuse pulled off a rout upset of [M7]Dayton (70-51 dominating the boards 48-28) and then caught a break only having to beat giant-killer [M15]Middle Tennessee in Round 2 (75-50). In fact, it was only [E10]Pittsburgh that failed make it all the way to the Sweet 16, tripping against resilient [E7]Wisconsin (43-47) in the first round.
Overall, the BIG 10 was strong, going 4-3 in the first round and placing three teams in the Sweet 16; but it also suffered one of the biggest first-round upsets in NCAA history when Jack Dawson [M15]Middle Tennessee shocked [M2]Michigan State (90-81 as Player Of The Year pDenzel Valentine was only mediocre [13p12a6r]). (Despite its No.2-seed, MichSt was the second-favorite to win it all in the Hoops Contest.) Of the seven times a 15-seed
has beaten a 2-seed, maybe only the losses in 1991 of [2]Syracuse (Jim Boeheim/fBilly Owens-LeRon Ellis-fDavid Johnson-pAdrian Autry) to [15]Richmond (Dick Tarrant/gCurtis Blair-Jim Shields-Kenny Wood) and in 1993 of [2]Arizona (Lute Olson/fChris Mills/gKhalid Reeves/pDamon Stoudamire) to [15]Santa Clara (Dick Davey/fPete Eisenrich/pJohnWoolery/gSteve Nash) rate the same magnitude as this one. Meanwhile, [E5]Indiana dispatched [E12]Chattanooga (99-74) and then beat Bluegrass arch-rival [E4]@Kentucky (73-@67) as the Wildcats once again had no inside game to match the Hoosiers' balanced attack. [S5]Maryland caught a break only needing to beat two 1BC/TiTo teams to make the second week: (79-74) over [S12]South Dakota State and (73-60) past 32-Splash [S13]Hawaii. [E7]Wisconsin followed its first-round win over [E10]Pittsburgh with a second-round stunner, beating highly regarded [E2]Xavier (66-63 on bBronson Koenig's game-winning three-pointer). [S7]Iowa escaped Round 1 in overtime past [S10]Temple (72-70[OT] on fAdam Woodbury's game-winning putback) but was no match for juggernaut [S2]Villanova in Round 2, falling (68-87). [M5]Purdue drew one of the toughest 1BC/TiTo teams in [M12]Little Rock and blew a 13-point lead down the stretch only to fall in double-overtime (83-85[2OT] as bJosh Hagins[31p6a5s] starred). [E11a]Michigan barely survived its Play-In game past [E11b]Tulsa (67-62) before falling to [M6]Notre Dame in Round 2.
With seven of its ten teams making the NCAA field, the BIG 12 maintained its overall rating as the nation's best conference; but the league only went 3-4 in the first round (although all three teams did make the Sweet 16). [S1]Kansas cruised into the second week, handling [S9]Connecticut (73-61). [W1]@Oklahoma wasn't as dominant as you might have expected; but playing in front of a "home" crowd in its cushy Oklahoma City Pod helped ease any nerves in tighter-than-they-should-have-been wins over [W15]Cal State-Bakersfield (@82-68) and [W10]VCU (@85-81) as bBuddy Hield averaged 32p in two games. Keen to erase the pain of last year's early exit, [M4]Iowa State played two solid games, dispatching [M13]Iona (94-81) and 32-Splash [M12]Little Rock (78-61) as Georges Niang tossed in 28p against both teams. [E3]West Virginia was stunned by veteran 1BC/TiTo [E14]Stephen F. Austin (56-70 as tThomas Walkup[33p9r4a;19/20ft] was spectacular). Meanwhile, [W5]Baylor found a way to get bounced in the first round for the second-straight year, this time at the hands of [W12]@Yale in Providence (75-@79 as bMakai Mason[31p4a6r] was unflappable). [W6]Texas met its match in fellow giant-killer [W11]Northern Iowa (72-75
on gPaul Jesperson's halfcourt banked-it-off-the-glass heave). [M8]Texas Tech bowed out right away against [M9]Butler (61-71).
The PAC-12 was a disappointing 2-5 in Round 1 and only placed one team into the Sweet 16. [W1]Oregon didn't look all that dominant, needing an endplay to beat [W8]St. Joseph's in Round 2 (69-64). Highly regarded [M3]Utah dispatched Jack Dawson [M14]Fresno State (80-69) in the first round but was totally stymied by veteran [M11]Gonzaga (59-82) in Round 2. Better-on-paper [S6]Arizona was handcuffed right away by Play-In [S11b]Wichita State's veteran backcourt (55-65). The loss of two starters to injury on top of a splashworthy 1BC/TiTo opponent was too much for [S4]California to handle as the Bears fell to [S13]Hawaii (66-77). [E8]USC lost a heartbreaker to [E9]Providence (69-70 on gRodney Bullock's broken-play layup at the buzzer). [S8]Colorado couldn't string together two solid halves and lost to [S9]Connecticut (67-74).
The BIG EAST was solid in Round 1 (going 4-1) but only managed one win in the second round. [S2]Villanova cruised into the second week after routing [S7]Iowa. [E2]Xavier expected much more than a second-round buzzer-beater loss at the hands of [E7]Wisconsin. Even more disappointing, young [M3]Seton Hall couldn't deal with the inside power of [M11]Gonzaga (52-68). [M9]Butler handled [M8]Texas Tech (71-61) but couldn't handle [M1]Virginia in Round 2. Similarly, [E9]Providence escaped past [E8]USC only to be routed by [E1]North Carolina.
The SEC co-champs were dominant in Round 1 but up against it in Round 2. After dispatching Jack Dawson [W14]Green Bay, [W3]Texas A&M put on a mad scramble against giant-killer [W11]Northern Iowa coming back from down 11 points with 44 seconds left to force overtime, ultimately winning (92-88[2OT]). [E4]@Kentucky crushed [E13]Stony Brook but met its match in Bluegrass arch-rival [E5]Indiana in Round 2.

The Mid-Majors weren't able to break through into the second week. The ATLANTIC 10 did have two 32-Splash teams but neither advanced past the second round. [W8]St. Joseph's escaped against fellow MMer [W9]Cincinnati (78-76) but lost an endplay to [W1]Oregon in Round 2. [W10]VCU beat shouldn't-have-been-there [W7]Oregon State (75-67) in Round 1 and put a scare in [W2]@Oklahoma in Round 2. Most disappointing, [M7]Dayton was dominated by shouldn't-have-been-there [M10]Syracuse.
(Without SMU competing), the AMERICAN only managed one team into the second round while three teams lost endplay results. [S9]Connecticut came back to beat [S8]Colorado in Round 1 but was no match for [S1]Kansas. [W9]Cincinnati came up short against [W8]St. Joseph's. [S10]Temple lost in overtime to [S7]Iowa. Play-In [E11b]Tulsa couldn't get past [E11a]Michigan.

B-Major teams claimed 15 out of 16 spots in Week 2; Mid-Majors -- (cinched at the waist all season) -- came up empty; officially, the last spot went to the 1BC WEST COAST. The should-have-been-multi-bid-Mid-Major WCC placed TiTo/co-champ [M11]Gonzaga through to the Sweet 16 with two impressive upsets: first, shutting down white-hot [M6]Seton Hall (68-52) and then, dumping trendy [M3]Utah (82-59).
(Has there been a more accomplished Mid-Major backcourt duo ever than [S11b]Wichita State's pFred Van Vleet and bRon Baker? -- as freshmen they made the Final Four; as sophomores they posted an undefeated regular season (losing in the Round of 32 to Kentucky in one of the greatest NCAA games ever); as juniors they made the Sweet 16; as seniors they've three-peated as MISSOURI VALLEY title champs and posted a 32-Splash finish: dumping fellow Play-In [S11a]Vanderbilt (70-50) and stopping [S6]Arizona in Round 1 before falling to [S3]Miami(Florida) in Round 2. Give this pair the ovation they deserve for what they've given us for four magnificent years.)
MVC [W11]Northern Iowa continued its big game prowess into the tourney with its buzzer-beater win over fellow giant-klller [W6]Texas in Round 1 and just missed out on the Sweet 16 with a double-overtime loss against [W3]Texas A&M in Round 2.

Five traditional 1BC leagues made 32-Splash breakthroughs -- (a solid number compared to just two last year). In their third-straight NCAA tourney, veteran [E14]Stephen F. Austin claimed a 32-Splash win for the second time, routing [E3]West Virginia and missing out on the Sweet 16 on a late-second putback against [E6]Notre Dame as tWalkup was the breakout star of the first weekend.
Jack Dawson [M15]Middle Tennessee's monumental upset of [M2]Michigan State wasn't completely unforeseen -- CONFERENCE USA has been a 1BC league the past four years, but its lone entrant has managed a 32-Splash win three of those times now.
[M12]Little Rock verified its splashworthy-ness that was apparent all season long with its double-overtime win over [M5]Purdue in Round 1. Similarly, [S13]Hawaii came through as might well have been expected over (an undermanned) [S4]California. [W12]@Yale wasn't as highly thought of during the regular season as those others but struck its own blow for 1BC-land in knocking off [W5]Baylor. (Only [S12]South Dakota State's endplay loss to [S5]Maryland came close for any other 1BC team. Perhaps most disappointing was [E12]Chattanooga's inability to even stay with [E5]Indiana.)

In the NIT, having two quarterfinalists still alive ([s2]St. Mary's and [n2]BYU) on top of its NCAA Sweet 16 team ([M11]Gonzaga), the WEST COAST has a solid case that it should have been at least a Mid-Major (and possibly a B-Major) league. [s1]Valparaiso made a case for its deserving an Anti-Spoiler NCAA bid with two solid wins as well. 1BC [n8]Wagner surprised [n1]St. Bonaventure on the road (79-@75), (but couldn't make it two in a row at [n4]Creighton). 1BC [e1]Monmouth made it to the second round (but it was only via a home win over fellow 1BC-er [e8]Bucknell (@90-80). Not even home court was enough to get Little Brother 1BC [e7]North Florida past Big Brother [e2]Florida (@68-97); and the Gators came through on the road again at [e3]Ohio State (74-@66) to make the quarterfinals.
(Winning your conference regular season title should count for more. Hey, it's great that title champs get an automatic bid into the NIT; but if you're a 1BC title champ that can't pull off the TiTo double, what has been a wonderful season overall ends in such humiliation with a likely road-blowout loss in obscurity in the NIT first round. Meanwhile, B-Major also-rans get undeserved bids to the NCAA and undeserved home games in the NIT. How about an automatic bid and a first-round home game for regular season title champs that don't make the NCAAs? That would give the NIT some of the same Cinderella magic moments that the first round of the NCAAs often delivers; and even if the 1BC host team does bow out, at least it would get a nice curtain-call ending to a successful season in front of the home fans.)
In the CBI, only [eB2]OVC/Morehead State was able to come through on the road (84-@80 at [eB1]MAAC/Siena) in the first round.
In the CIT, slumming Mid-Major A10/Fordham managed to lose at home to PAT/Boston University (@66-69). Three teams were awarded byes directly into the quarters based on their first-round performance: BIGW/UC-Irvine, IVY/Columbia and SUNB/Texas-Arlington. SUNB/Louisiana won on the road in the second round (80-@72 at SOCON/Furman).

[M1]Virginia and [E1]North Carolina have the easiest paths to the Final Four with the upsets that have happened in their regions while [S1]Kansas/[S2]Villanova and [W1]Oregon/[W2]Oklahoma appeared headed for juggernaut showdowns in their Regional Finals.
In the NIT, home court should be enough to get @[s1]Valparaiso over [s2]St. Mary's, @[e1]Monmouth past [e4]George Washington, @[n2]BYU over [n4]Creighton and @[w1]South Carolina past [w2]San Diego State all through to the semifinals in New York.
In the CBI, MM Duquesne (which has to go on the road at Morehead State) and Nevada have the strongest pedigrees among the quarterfinalists.
In the CIT, Columbia got both a bye into the quarters and a home game to boot -- nice; but Louisiana is the one remaining team that was on the radar before the season started.
(The new VEGAS-16 tourney still doesn't get started until Monday week.)
